A marking scandal has surfaced at the Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in Rohtak,in which,first-year BTech students who had scored very poorly in their semester examinations, were passed some with first class divisions after the re-evaluation. The answersheets (in possession of The Indian Express),however, show a stark difference in marking from the first evaluation and the re-evaluation.
After an internal probe,MDU has barred 10 evaluators from examination duties for two to 10 years. There are 300 answersheets with marking anomalies, sources said.
The semester examinations were conducted in December,2010 and the results declared in September,2011. Students were given 15 days to apply for re-evaluation and the revised results were out in February,2012.
By February 23,MDU,however,initiated a probe into the unusual marking patterns. On June 26,10 evaluators were debarred from examination duties, including marking, checking of answersheets and invigilation. An evaluator under scanner,Dr Satish Kumar, has lodged a complaint with the University Grants Commission last week, challenging MDUs verdict. Kumar claimed he had failed students who performed poorly.
Sources said students, who scored as less as seven marks, managed to get 40 after the re-evaluation. Among other instances,11 became 54,23 became 48,19 became 37,20 became 54 and so on.
The Physics paper has the starkest differences with marks varying from 0 (first examiner) to 78 (second examiner) to 55 (third examiner),7-59-64,24-75-60,18-43-47 and 35-89-62. The re-evaluator who marked these answersheets (23) has been debarred for two years.
When asked,MDU Vice-Chancellor R P Hooda said: We have taken action against the examiners and are in the process of examining what action should be taken against the students, who benefited. In the past,90 students had written their mobile numbers on answersheets, with an appeal to the examiners to approach them. We had debarred such students from appearing in exams for one year.
