MC mulls putting streetlight maintenance into pvt hands

MC is privatising maintenance of streetlights due to complaints of non-functional streetlights in many sectors.

The Municipal Corporation is considering privatisation of maintenance of streetlights in view of constant complaints of non-functional streetlights in several sectors. A proposal to this effect is likely to come up for discussion at a meeting of the corporation scheduled for July 28.

There are around 30,000 streetlights which are maintained by the MC. There are frequent complaints of poor maintenance, especially during the monsoon. Corporation officials blame it on the Electrical Department which is short-staffed.

Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh said that a proposal for outsourcing maintenance was being worked out. “There are several instances in which the electricity cables have been stolen, due to which the streetlights have become non-functional. There are more such cases in the southern sectors. The staff in the Electrical Department is inadequate.”

The agency that is hired for the job will be paid on the basis of the number of streetlights that are functional.

The MC is also considering starting an anti-rabies dispensary in Sector 35. At present, there is just one such dispensary in Sector 19
