The Municipal Corporation may soon start producing electricity at the Sewerage Treatment Plant at Diggian. The feasibility of the proposal, the idea for which was mooted by Mayor Kamlesh, will be shortly looked into.
The Mayor, after her recent trip to Gujarat, moved the proposal to use the gases produced from the sludge at the plant to produce electricity. In a communiqué to the Municipal Commissioner,Kamlesh said the possibility of producing electricity at the plant must be considered.
Councillors, along with the Mayor, had earlier studied the functioning of a similar plant in Surat. The plant, the first of its kind in the country, produces gases that are used to generate electricity.
The energy-rich constituents of sewage gas are put to use under this model. The concept will ensure reduction in emission of green house gases apart from preventing pollution due to disposal of untreated waste generated by urban and industrial sectors. The sewerage treatment plant (STP) will not generate electricity on a large scale, but it can be put to internal use. It can be supplied for street lighting, functioning of the plant and other such purposes. The MC could save a lot of money that goes towards electricity bills, said councillor Jatinder Bhatia.
The STP at Diggian is being upgraded from 15 MGD to 30 MGD at a cost of nearly Rs 28.98 crore. Tertiary treated water is being produced at the plant. The construction of main constituents including stilling chamber, mechanical and manual screens, belt conveyer has been completed and the work of testing and commissioning is under progress.
Mayor Kamlesh said: We have the infrastructure that is required to produce electricity. The project, once started, will save the corporation lakhs of rupees. It is also an energy efficient way of producing electricity.
