Taking credit for the opening of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, Chief Minister of West Punjab in Pakistan, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, said that her father and former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, was the first to advocate opening the doors of Kartarpur Sahib for Sikh pilgrims. She mentioned that he would watch people paying respect to the gurudwara from the India-Pakistan border with binoculars.
Chief Minister Maryam Sharif said, “When Sikh pilgrims from India come here, it reminds me of what Nawaz Sharif used to say: ‘We should not fight with our neighbors. We should open the doors of our hearts and countries.’”

The Kartarpur Corridor was opened in 2019 when Imran Khan was the Prime Minister of Pakistan. He is currently in jail, and the Pakistan Muslim League of Nawaz Sharif came to power in Pakistan earlier this year. The party also formed the government in the state of West Punjab.
Addressing Sikh pilgrims from India at Kartarpur Sahib, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reiterated her father’s belief that nations should not fight with their neighbors.

She said, “I am Pakistani, but I am also a pure Punjabi, and that is a bond between us. Punjab resides in our hearts. I want to assure Punjabis from both Punjab that I will take care of the respect of our elders.”
“All Sikhs across the world are welcome to come to Pakistan,” she added.
She reminisced, “Today, I remembered my village. My ancestors were from Jatti Umra in Amritsar. Once, someone brought soil from India, and I placed it on my grandfather’s grave.”
“When I became Chief Minister, I received congratulations from Punjab in India as well. People from both Punjab in India and Pakistan celebrated my becoming Chief Minister,” she recalled.
She also joined pilgrims at the Langar Hall at Kartarpur Sahib, enjoying the meal and meeting with Sikh pilgrims.
