Manpreet postpones rally to Mar 27

Rebel Akali leader Manpreet Badal, who had roused media and popular interest with the announcement of a grand rally on March 23.

Rebel Akali leader Manpreet Badal, who had roused media and popular interest with the announcement of a grand rally on March 23 — the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh — to declare the formation of his party in Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkar Kalan, has put off the event by four days. The rally on March 27,however,will still be held at Bhagat Singh’s village.

Manpreet said he had postponed the rally keeping in view the chaos that would result in the village with all major political parties, including Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD),putting up shows of strength.

Notably,Manpreet had announced much in advance that the martyrdom day of Shaeed Bhagat Singh would be the great day to announce his political outfit. It is also learnt that Manpreet suspects both Congress and SAD will try to rope in his supporters.

Manpreet, who was in Jalandhar district to address a rally at Shahkot today, told reporters that to avoid inconvenience to his supporters,he had decided to postpone the rally to March 27 at the same venue.

About his new plans for March 23,he said he along with his supporters would visit Hussainiwala border to pay homage to the martyrs.

He also flayed the Punjab government for deliberately imposing section 144 in Kapurthala and Gurdaspur districts where his ‘Jago Punjab Yatra’ was scheduled to pass. Manpreet avoided any direct reply about a possible alliance with BSP or any other political party.

‘Will attend House as Independent’

Manpreet Badal said on Thursday he will attend the Budget session of the Punjab Assembly that starts on Friday as an Independent MLA and if separate arrangements are not made for his seating,he will not participate in the session. Asked whether he had made a request on the subject to the Speaker,he said the Speaker was aware of his (Manpreet’s) expulsion from SAD.

Evasive action to avoid chaos

Manpreet, who had booked an 11-acre plot in Khatkar Kalan to announce his new political party way back in November says,“Both Akali Dal and Congress want to be in competition and outdo us. I have myself been a part of Akali Dal rallies on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh earlier. They were held in a one-marla ground near the museum with just 1000-1500 supporters. Now both parties want to spoil our show. I don’t want Khatkar Kalan to become a logistical nightmare on March 23. It will be impossible for a small village to accommodate lakhs of supporters. Where will so many cars and buses be parked?”
