Man wanted for murder of live-in partner arrested in Chandigarh

Police said that following detailed investigation, forensic examination of the scene, and eyewitness accounts, the accused was apprehended on July 8, by the District Crime Cell (DCC) and Sector 34 police officials.

The Chandigarh Police has arrested a 35-year-old man wanted in connection with the chilling murder of his live-in partner in Burail village. The arrest was made by a team of officials from the police station in Sector 34, Chandigarh.

The accused, identified as Shankar Mahali, was living in Burail, Sector 45, Chandigarh. Originally from Alipurduar district in West Bengal, he was in a live-in relationship for several years with the victim, Kulwanti (30), who had separated from her husband, according to the police.

The case was registered on June 25, under the section of murder 103(1) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, after Kulwanti was found unconscious with multiple injuries at her residence. She was declared dead on arrival at GMCH-32. Her cousin, who discovered the body, informed police that Shankar had frequently threatened and assaulted the victim in the past.

Police said that following detailed investigation, forensic examination of the scene, and eyewitness accounts, the accused was apprehended on July 8, by the District Crime Cell (DCC) and Sector 34 police officials.

He was produced in court the same day, and police secured one-day remand for further questioning. Further investigation is underway.
