On August 22, the police received information about a decomposed body buried in a roadside ditch near Sukhomajri village along the Pinjore-Nalagarh bypass. The body was later identified as that of Rajiv Gupta.
According to the police, the accused, Simran, 21, a resident of Manimajra, Chandigarh, who had been absconding in connection with the case, was arrested on September 14. She was produced in court on Monday and remanded in police custody for three days for interrogation.
According to ACP (Crime) Arvind Kamboj, the investigation revealed that Simran had first contacted the victim Gupta through Instagram and lured him to meet her. Following this, her family members allegedly murdered him.
Police officials said that Rajiv’s father had earlier told police that his son had married in April this year but reportedly was also involved in a relationship with another woman. Due to this, the woman’s brother and uncle had threatened to kill him, a complaint that had previously been lodged with Chandigarh Police. On August 9, Rajiv left home on his Activa scooter, after which his mobile phone was switched off, with his last location traced to Pinjore.
DCP (Crime) Manpreet Singh informed that the Detective Staff had earlier arrested three accused in the case on August 27 — Kamaldeep alias Kundan (the woman’s brother, resident of Pipliwala), Satyanarayan alias Satta (resident of Panipat), and Vinod alias Boda (resident of Naggal Kheri, Panipat, both uncles of the woman).
They were remanded in police custody for three days before being sent to judicial custody.
