The Mohali police have booked a man on Friday for allegedly selling fake university degrees. His office was raided and police seized fake degrees from his office.
The accused identified as Sanjay Kumar,hailing from Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh,has allegedly been selling fake degrees for the last several years,right under the polices nose.
Interestingly,Kumars office in Phase 1 is located
less than 500 metres from the Senior Superintendent of Police office.
The accused is absconding and a case has been registered against him.
Police said,a team raided Kumars office on Thursday evening after getting a tip-off. During the raid,police rang Kumar to call him to the office.
Kumar,who was in Panchkula at that time,switched off his phone fearing arrest and has been absconding since then. Police alleged that Kumar sold fake degrees of lesser-known or fake universities to innocent people. Several fake degrees were recovered from his office.
He has been booked for forgery and dishonestly
inducing delivery of property under Sections 420,465,468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code.
He sold various kinds of degrees ranging from BA to B.Com and BBA,and charged anywhere between Rs 2,000 – Rs 20,000. One of the universities mentioned in a certificate was shut down years ago, police said. An internet search website lists the office address of the accused as International Institute of Business. The matter is under investigation and efforts are on to nab the accused,police said.
