Designer Rohit Kamra adds a dash of colour to clothes men wear
Blues, black, tan, the odd grey or two mens wear is often limited to the basic (read mundane) colours of life. Designer Rohit Kamra, however, believes it is time for that to change. Little surprise then that at his last outing at the Lakme Fashion Week,he presented his spring-summer 2010,in a vibrant palette.
Our theme was New Pure Man where we showcased a collection that was not just colourful but aimed to redefine opulence as well, explains the designer, who retails under the signature label Abhishek & Rohit Kamra. Abhishek is my brother and partner, says Kamra. He was in Chandigarh to formally announce the labels arrival at Soh-Koh,a multi-brand designer store in Sector 26.
Chandigarh is not new to me. I studied here in the early90s and I know the citys men love to dress up as much as its women, says Kamra, who sent in a sampling of his autumn-winter 2009 collection to the store some time back. The response must have been encouraging for Kamra to arrive once again, this time with his bags full. Men dress up rather sombre. I dont know whats keeping them from experimenting with cuts, colour and more, says the designer.
Kamras collection brings in what he calls,a synthesis of Eastern and Western sensibilities. We lay a lot of emphasis on keeping the exotic Indian touch. Colour is a strong point, he adds. So you have short Nehru jackets, long and short kurtas, safari jackets in colours such as orange, rust, plum, black and even gold. The fabrics used for spring-summer are mostly linen with a bit of velvet and satin too, he says. With snug cuts,Indian design detailing and generous use of colour, its all a handsome mix indeed.
