Ludhiana: Four arrested after clash inside gurdwara, gunshots fired

The arrested persons were identfied as Sarup Singh, Pal Singh of Jarkhar village, Gagandeep Singh of Lalton Khurd village and Ajay Singh of Dhandhra.

The Ludhiana police arrested four people after a violent clash ensued inside Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Manji Sahib at Jarkhar village of Ludhiana on Saturday. According to the head priest (granthi) who filed a police complaint, a group of people barged inside the shrine, broke the locks of golak (donation box) and replaced them with theirs “with an intention to take possession of the gurdwara” and also “opened fire” before fleeing.

The arrested persons were identfied as Sarup Singh, Pal Singh of Jarkhar village, Gagandeep Singh of Lalton Khurd village and Ajay Singh of Dhandhra. Police said that their accomplices identified as Harbans Singh of Jassowal village, Shingara Singh, Surinder Singh and Baljit Singh of Jarkhar were yet to be arrested, while at least ten more who allegedly barged inside the shrine are yet to be identified.

Head granthi of the gurdwara, Jorawar Singh in his complaint to the police said that rival group members barged inside the shrine as they want to take possession of the shrine illegally. He further said that they broke old locks of the golak and installed their own locks on it. They also allegedly tried to take over the office and before fleeing, one of them opened fire with his weapon targeting gurdwara committee general secretary Jarnail Singh who suffered minor injuries. Jorawar Singh said that four persons including him, Jarnail Singh, president Dilbagh Singh and one Mahinder Singh suffered injuries in the attack.

He further told police that seeing the situation getting tense, he had made an announcement in the village via gurdwara speaker following which other villagers started rushing towards the gurdwara. Seeing villagers gather, the accused fled from the spot.

An FIR under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 379 (theft), 506 (criminal intimidation), 295A (deliberate attempt to outrage religious feelings), 447 (trespassing), 511 (attempt to commit offences), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 427 (mischief causing damage) of IPC and sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms Act was registered at Dehlon police station.

Inspector Paramdeep Singh, SHO Dehlon police station said that four persons were arrested and rest were being identified.
