Four of Ludhiana family, unborn baby die in Brampton house fire tragedy

The family has been identified as natives of Guram village in Punjab’s Ludhiana district.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Sukhdeep Deol, a relative from the village, said that the four deceased were Harinder Kaur, her daughter-in-law Gurjeet Kaur, her grandson (Gurjeet’s son) Bantbeer Singh (2), and Harinder’s niece Anu.

Three others — Harinder’s daughter Arshveer Kaur (who was eight months pregnant), her son Amritveer Singh, and her grandson Jora Singh (5) — sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a hospital for treatment. Arshveer, who was eight months pregnant with her second child, jumped from the roof to save herself but suffered a miscarriage and lost her baby.

Deol said that at the time of the tragedy, Arshveer’s husband Jugraj Singh, a truck driver from Gosal village, was out of town and not at home.

“Harinder Kaur had gone to Canada to help her daughter Arshveer as her delivery was nearing. Both of Harinder’s children — daughter Arshveer and son Amritveer — lived in Canada with their families in adjoining homes. It is still unclear how the fire broke out, but according to reports, it started from the washing machine,” Deol said.

Following the tragedy, Harinder Kaur’s husband Davinder Singh, who was in India, has rushed to Canada. It remains unclear whether the last rites will be performed in India or Canada.
