Low paid female workers demand better wages

Thousands of women working in the various departments of Punjab government held a joint protest for over 3 hours in Sector 34,Chandigarh,on Sunday,to demand better wages for themselves.

Thousands of women working in the various departments of Punjab government held a joint protest for over 3 hours in Sector 34,Chandigarh,on Sunday,to demand better wages for themselves. The protesting females workers who earn between Rs 750 to 1,000 per month are demanding better pay from the government.

The police had made adequate arrangements to make sure that the protest went through peacefully. A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area since early morning.

Female workers from Part Time Sewing Teachers Union,Mid Day Meal Workers,Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers of all districts of Punjab came out to demand better wages. The protestors wanted to take up their demands with the Chief Minister of Punjab. The protestors alleged that the government was exploiting them and their demands for better wages were not being met. They wanted the government to provide them with atleast minimum wages.

The workers refused to hand over their demand charter to the Chief Minister’s officer on special duty because they had already submitted their demands to the chief minister several times before. The protestors were stopped by the police around 5 pm as they were blocking the road.

After the protest,six representatives were called up to the Chief Minister’s residence to discuss their demands.
