Badal inaugurates already working,under-construction college

Patiala: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday inaugurated an under-construction University College at Ghanour,35 kilometers from here,ahead of Assembly elections in the state. The college,which commenced its session last year in its four rooms,would have 22 rooms in its three blocks,which was yet be completed. The two blocks comprising 18 rooms are under -construction.The University Grants Commission has sanctioned Rs 104 crore for setting up 13 new degree colleges in educationally backward districts of the state. The college affiliated with Punjabi University started its

classes in BSc and PGDCA last year.

Cong NRI cell to form district-level panels

Chandigarh: The newly constituted NRI cell of the Punjab Congress held its first meeting at Chandigarh on Saturday. The meeting,presided over by chairman Inder Dev Singh Musafir,and attended by members from the state and through teleconferencing by those in other parts of the world,decided to form district-level sub-committees. Members have been asked to recommend the names of the prospective sub-committee members from their areas within the next five days. Similar sub-committees will also be formed on an international level,a Congress statement said.

AISSF to oppose Advani’s yatra in Punjab

Moga: The All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) on Saturday said it would oppose L K Advani’s rath yatra in Punjab as “it will spread communal disharmony in the state”. “We will not allow Advani to disrupt Punjab’s communal harmony,” AISSF president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammed said. A campaign would be launched against the yatra,he added.

Cong to Team Anna: Oust Prashant Bhushan

JALANDHAR: Flaying lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan for his remarks on Kashmir,state Congress secretary Ashok Gupta on Saturday asked Team Anna to oust him. Gupta said that a Supreme Court lawyer giving such a statement,which is very much against the Indian constitution,can not fight against the issues like corruption. Bhushan had recently said that people of Kashmir should be given the right to plebiscite.

5-day sterilisation camp in Haryana

Chandigarh: Haryana Health Department will organise special sterilisation camps for five days for both men and women across the state from October 17. An incentive money of Rs 1,100 would be given to each man undergoing sterlisation. According to the department,contraceptive pills,pregnancy tests and vaccination facilities would also be provided at the camp. Counseling,free medicines and children’s vaccination facilities would also be available.

Beautification award for 393 schools

Chandigarh: As many as 393 schools in blocks where National Programme for Education of Girls at Elementary Level ( NPEGEL) has been implemented,and 88 schools in non-NPEGEL blocks,have been given beautification awards in Haryana. Under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,the blocks organise competitions in schools on cleanliness,environment,promotion of general performance of students,promotion of girls’ education and meena manch activities. The evaluation of the schools was done by a committee headed by block education officer. As per the scheme the award of Rs 10,000 each was given to the best school in non-NPEGEL blocks and Rs 5,000 per Model Cluster School was provided in NPEGEL blocks.

Bitta refuses to comment on Bhullar

Chandigarh: Maninderjeet Singh Bitta,the chairman of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF),who had slammed the call for clemency for Devinderpal Singh Bhullar,the Khalistan terrorist convicted for an attack on him that left nine dead,on Saturday said he has nothing to say on the matter. “After the Akali government backed out (from bringing a clemency resolution),I have nothing to say,” he said. The former Youth Congress chief,however,attacked the UPA government for being lax in security. Referring to the recovery of explosives from a car in Ambala,he said the vehicle was parked near a fuel depot. “It could have led to disastrous consequences. The government has not learnt any lessons from the past ,” he said.
