Going with the theme,it was a well arranged event as coffee and conversations marked the launch of Chennai-based author Nandini Krishnans book,Hitched The Modern Woman and Arranged Marriage (Random House India) at Cafe Nomad in Sector 7 on Thursday. Travelling across the country to get up,close and personal with readers,Krishnan a playwright, actor, blogger, journalist and writer talked about the subject and concept of her book as readers pitched in with their experience about marriages in general, and arranged ones in particular.
Krishnan read excerpts from the book and also shared her experiences while she was in the process of writing the book. The modern womans attitude to marriage especially to arranged marriage is a confused one, said the writer. Based largely on interviews with women who have had arranged marriages, and their families,Hitched The Modern Woman and Arranged Marriage looks at the stories of a cross-section of modern, educated women who married young, married late, married after dating other men, never dated from across India and belonging to various castes and religions.
The book, added the author, isnt intended as a guide for women looking to have arranged marriages alone. The women and men who have shared their stories and advice are at various stages of that journey. Some are searching for spouses, some have married recently, some have studied after marriage and babies, and some have gone to work for the first time after their children began to go to full-day school, some have stuck it out in unhappy marriages, and some have walked out of wedlock, said Krishnan. The cafe is now looking to organise interactions with artists and authors on a regular basis.
