With three losses in five matches,Kolkata Knight Riders ‘s top order and middle-order has not shown any signs of big hitting so far in the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League. Coming from Kolkata after a loss to Kings XI Punjab, the Riders are now hopefull of scoring a win over the Punjab franchise in their away match and coach Trevor Bayliss is expecting the top-order and middle-order to fir in the match against Kings XI Punjab today.
“I do not think we have batted anywhere near our best in the tournament so far. We played well against Bangalore which we won by 42 runs and that’s been our best effort so far. We need to bat more like that we have to win in the tournament and top order and middle-order needs to score more runs to put us in a winning situation,” said KKR coach Trevor Bayliss while addressing a press conference on Tuesday. While conditions at PCA Stadium are different as compared to Eden Gardens,Bayliss believes that the team has to decide on the team composition and there will be some changes in the squad for today’s match. With the likes of Jacques Kallis,Gautam Gamhir,Manoj Tiwary and Yusuf Pathan in their ranks,Knight Riders are waiting the big guns to fire.
“I haven’t seen the wicket yet. Last game that was played here,we watched it on TV and the wicket was different than what we got in Kolkata. The wicket has got some pace and we want our batsmen to perform. We will sit down tonight or early tomorrow morning and discuss. But there is a possibility of some change. I cannot say where that will be (whether middle order or somewhere else),but we will have to discuss,” said Bayliss, adding that his top order batsmen need to play some big knocks. The Kolkata team has seen its bowlers taking wickets regularly and with Balaji,Sunil Naraine and Breet Lee among wickets,Bayliss showered praise on the bowling unit and said the bowlers will play a key role in Wednesday’s match. “Our bowlers have done well in all the five matches. Balaji,Sunil Naraine,Breet Lee and even Kallis has done a good job with the ball. Shakib had a good game for us and we are happy with our bowling unit. The bowlers are bonding well and have been supporting each other. We expect them to take advantage of the wicket here at CPA,” said Bayliss. With West Indian spinner Sunil Naraine playing instead of Iqbal Abdullah,Bayliss said Abdullah is in the scheme of things for the team and Abdullah will play a role in the team’s plan ahead. “It’s a very difficult situation. He obviously performed well last season. With the advent of Sunil Naraine coming on board,it makes it more difficult for him. But as I have said that we will play different combinations on different wickets. So I see him playing a role in this competition. He understands there are some very good players in the squad. This time,he is the unlucky one,but I am sure he will get to play his role at some stage.” said Bayliss.
