THE MOVE to confer the status of a private university to the iconic Khalsa college in Amritsar, has gathered pace. Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal has sent the proposal with the necessary recommendations to the Chief Minister’s office after holding a review meeting for the proposal with representatives of several academic institutes, including the Dean University Instructions (DUI).

Several attempts were made to get a reaction from Kaushal over the specifics of the proposal but he did not respond to phone calls or to text messages.

Government approval to the project is likely to be opposed by the Congress, which has been terming the move as an attempt by the Majithia clan to “take over” the Sikh educational institution. Satyajit Singh Majithia, father of Punjab Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia and Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal heads the Khalsa College Governing Council.

Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Raj Singh Majithia (Lally Majithia) said information on the proposal asked by him under RTI Act had not been provided by the Chief Secretary’s office and other offices concerned to him on the false pretext of third party information.

“I have now called an all-party meeting tomorrow, except Shiromani Akali Dal, in Company Bagh in Amritsar in order to take up this issue and to think of ways to thwart this move,” he said. Majithia added that the moment SAD-BJP government issues an ordinance on the subject, it would be challenged in court.

The proposal to form a Khalsa college university had been mooted on several occasions in th past too, but had to be dropped in view of the strong opposition to the idea. However, with the SAD-BJP government in the final year of its tenure, there seems to be a concentrated move to push through the proposal.
