Kalka Mail mishap: Missing resident found dead

The two-day long search of a family in Chandigarh for their relative who was aboard Howrah-Kalka mail ended in tragedy. The body of 20-year-old Charanjit was found at a hospital in Kanpur.

Charanjit was working at a local bakery in the city. His uncle Kishen Kumar is residing in Sector 9.

He and wife had been searching for news on Charanjit. The duo for the past two days had been making numerous rounds of the Chandigarh railway station. Every list that came in from Kanpur about injured lowered their hopes. There was no mention of Charanjit.

Kishen says that his relatives had also been searching at different hospitals where the injured were admitted. At one hospital in Kanpur,they showed Charanjit’s picture and their worst fears came true.

He says that Charanjt’s body would be taken to Bengal for last rites. Charanjit is survived by his parents and a married sister. He was the sole bread winner of his family. He had called Kishen after boarding the ill-fated train.

The Howrah-Kalka mail derailed on Sunday leaving over 70 dead and more than 100 injured.

There were around 98 passengers who were to disembark at Chandigarh and Kalka railway stations. As per the lists that came in from Kanpur,there was just one resident of Chandigarh admitted in a hospital in Kanpur.

Most of the passengers were residents of Bengal,either working in Chandigarh or Kalka or coming to the city to meet their relatives.
