Kabaddi player murder: Main accused shot dead in encounter, another nabbed at Delhi airport

One of the key accused in the killing of the 30-year-old kabaddi player was shot dead in Mohali on Wednesday by Punjab Police in an encounter, while another accused was nabbed at the Delhi airport.

Harpinder alias Middu, a resident of Naushehra Pannuan, was killed in the encounter in which two head constables were also injured.

Police in Mohali said Middu was apprehended following an exchange of fire with the police team in Lalru near Mohali.

The other accused, Aishdeep Singh, in the murder of Kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh’s murder was was nabbed at Delhi airport while attempting to flee the country to escape to Muscat, police said.

Punjab Police posted on X: “In a major breakthrough, police apprehended Harpinder, a resident of Naushehra Pannuan, Tarn Taran, in connection with the recent murder of Rana Balachauria in Mohali. The accused was apprehended following an exchange of fire with the police team. During the operation, the accused sustained injuries and has been shifted to a hospital. Two police personnel were also injured during the chase and are receiving medical treatment. Preliminary investigation reveals that the arrested accused was involved in multiple heinous crimes and has a serious criminal background. Further investigation is underway.”

Police have also arrested the mastermind in the case identified as Aishdeep Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran, who was staying in Russia. Aishdeep came to India on November 25, on the directions of Dony Bal, to execute this murder.

SSP Mohali Harmandeep Singh Gill said the accused Aishdeep gave information about his accomplice Harpinder. Police teams led by DSP Dera Bassi Bikramjit Singh Brar and Inspectors Sumit Mor, Pushvinder Singh and Malkiat Singh conducted a raid at the location given by him in Lalru.

Middu opened fire resulting in serious gunshot wounds to two police personnel — Head Constables Gulab Singh and Kumar Sharma, the SSP said.

The police teams retaliated in self-defence during which the suspect was injured and was rushed to Civil Hospital Dera Bassi.
