Jeev set to return from injury layoff

Returning from an injury layoff,India's Jeev Milkha Singh will head into the USD 1.9 million Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open next week with the intention of tasting victory.

Returning from an injury layoff,India’s Jeev Milkha Singh will head into the USD 1.9 million Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open next week with the intention of tasting victory. Jeev,Order of Merit champion,recently missed the Omega European Masters in Switzerland,an event sanctioned by the Asian Tour and European Tour,due to a finger injury. Jeev injured his trigger finger on the right hand but a short break has prepared him for a title assault in the Land of the Rising Sun where he has won four titles. The two-time Asian champion enjoyed emphatic victories in Scotland and Wales respectively and is all set to add another feather in his cap at the Higashi Hirono Golf Club from September 20-23. “The most important thing is that when a player is injury free,you can work harder. It gives you more confidence. That’s the reason why I won (in Scotland),” said Jeev,who featured in all four rounds in the British Open in July.

Bhullar still second

Taipei: Meanwhile,Punjab golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar was still lying second,while Anirban Lahiri was fifth after the second-round play in the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship was called off due to Typhoon Sanba here today. The course was unplayable due to weather conditions at the Linkou International Golf and Country Club and tournament officials have decided to reduce the USD 500,000 event into a 54-stroke play tournament. “The extremely wet and windy conditions made it a challenge for play to continue today. The safety of our players going out to the course was also another priority. As such,we have taken the decision to abandon play for today,” said Wanchai Meechai,Asian Tour’s Tournament Director for the Yeangder TPC. All players will return Sunday morning 8am to complete their rounds where the forecast is for much calmer conditions. There could even be a Monday finish so that 54 holes can be played. Philippines’ Angelo Que holds the clubhouse lead with his first round seven-under 65 while American Jason Knutzon,who was even-par through nine holes,took a share of second place alongside India Bhullar.
