IT Park: Deadline extended for firms

With economic slowdown hitting the expansion plans of most of the IT companies across India, the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HIDC) has extended the deadline for the IT companies to start their commercial operations at its flagship IT park in Panchkula.

With economic slowdown hitting the expansion plans of most of the IT companies across India, the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HIDC) has extended the deadline for the IT companies to start their commercial operations at its flagship IT park in Panchkula. According to officials, the deadline has been extended up to June this year after the companies had gone slow on the plans to start the commercial operations.

However, with officials making it clear that all the companies will not be able to start their operations by the due date, the HSIDC will at the maximum extend the deadline by another year before it starts resuming back the land. The project was slated to bring in an employment of 20,000 people with the investment pegged at Rs 800 crore.

According to officials, while nearly 50 per cent of the work has been completed on the IT campus, which is part of the IT park, the construction was still on at a major chunk of the park by the individual IT companies and their deadline has been extended now upto June this year. With allotments started in June 2008,the HSIDC officials said that the commercial operation should have been started by the companies by June last year itself.

However while most of the companies have started the constructions, some have not kick-started their activity at all and the corporation has clamped down on them by resuming the alloted land. “The resumption and surrender of five plots has already been done,” said an official. He added that out of the 72-acre IT park that has been laid out,a major portion of the land is reserved for the companies while part of the park is also earmarked for commercial activities as well as the other allied facilities like the setting up of lease line facility by BSNL.

The IT campus that is being currently constructed by Rolling Construction Private Ltd is spread over 10 acres of land and will be given out to the individual IT players on lease basis under the plug-and-play arrangement, officials said.

R P Gupta, general manager estates, said that “the slowdown affecting the growth of companies will be discussed by the corporation board.”

Officials said that there was a provision for extending the deadline under the agreement reached between the Haryana government and the IT companies, but they add that since the construction by companies is going on,that only means that the pace of running of commercial operations has only slowed down and not been shelved. “There is certainly a commitment by companies,as besides the normal IT campus,17 of the 25 companies which were allotted land have already started their constructions,” said an official.
