In the Bag

Artist Bose Krishnamachari now launches a line of clutches

Shah Rukh Khan has a 6-ft Bose Krishanmachari canvas in his study and Tina Ambani possesses a diptych by him. The artist’s trademark bold abstracts, with zany colours and swirls, have long been a lifestyle must-have for the fashionable class. Now,we will see society ladies carrying clutches that have the signature Krishanmachari swirls and his name emblazoned in diamante print on the front flap.

Krishanmachari, famous for moving beyond the canvas and venting his creativity by designing non-functional chairs and furniture, and even his home in Kerala, has stepped into the field of fashion accessories with a range of bags. This is in contrast with his earlier works that involved installation, video art and photo-realist painting. What prompted this move?

“I have been toying with the idea of bringing out a line of accessories that will be exclusive and yet accessible,” says Krishnamachari, who collaborated with Tushar and Vikram Sethi of the Institute of Contemporary Indian Art (ICIA) at Kalaghoda,Mumbai. The artist is currently living out of a suitcase as he travels around art fairs across the world. He will be back in India to launch the bags at the end of May.

“We have a limited edition of 200 bags that are priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 7,500. There are matching scarves to go with it. We chose bags because it was easy to execute,” says Tushar Sethi. He adds that Krishnamachari’s paintings have been digitally transferred on to the satin material of the bags. “We plan to work with other artists on more products that will be exclusive to ICIA,” adds Sethi.
