In the Art Zone

“Printmaking is not considered as an art parallel to painting, and has not even been promoted in galleries and art schools,” rues Mumbai-based artist Vilas Shinde,as he takes a group of college students through the basics of printmaking.

“Printmaking is not considered as an art parallel to painting, and has not even been promoted in galleries and art schools,” rues Mumbai-based artist Vilas Shinde,as he takes a group of college students through the basics of printmaking. Shinde, along with 10 other artists from across the country are at the Government College of Art in Chandigarh these days as part of the National Printmakers Camp organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi,New Delhi.

“Open to the public and college students alike, the workshop also includes interactive sessions with art lovers,” says Ahmedabad-based artist Walter D’Souza, adding that the camp has given them a chance to work with students and explain to them how art is not just about painting.

“We create prints with an element of originality,” says D’Souza, taking the students through the technical printmaking process, which is both intricate and elaborate.

D’Souza, who teaches at various art institutes, strongly feels that art needs to be introduced early on at the school level and should not be merely restricted to painting. “Workshops and interactive sessions for children and awareness of the gallery owners about promoting printmaking is the need of the hour,” he says.

Also participating in the camp is Ajit Dube from Karnataka, who feels such camps act as a platform for artists to share their art, thoughts and also update themselves on what his contemporaries.

Showing his tools that he sourced from Bengal,D’Souza tells the students,“Invest in good tools,hand-crafted ones are the best as these will serve you for many years and will give your work a distinct identity.” As the artists give final touches to their work,Shinde sums up the sentiment,“We are not separate from art.”
