The Opposition Congress on Monday revelled in what it described as a symbolic victory over the Badals as Sarchand Singh, the media adviser to Bikram Majithia, the Youth Akali Dal president and brother-in-law of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, joined the party in presence of the state Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh.

Stating that Sarchand has been Majithia’s key man for eight years,Amarinder said it was a major setback to the ruling SAD.

“His joining will further strengthen the Congress,” Amarinder added.

Justifying his pre-poll move,Sarchand said,“To save Punjab,we have to strengthen Amarinder’s hands. I felt suffocated in the Akali Dal as Majithia was only accumulating personal wealth. He had no vision for the youth,” he said.

The Congress sees his joining as not just a personal setback for Majithia but a symbolic victory for its own candidate from the Majithia assembly segment,Lali Majithia.

“It will impact the perception of people that a man who had been with Akalis for eight years deems them unfit to rule. It will set the tone for Bikram’s defeat from the seat,” said Lali Majithia, who had lost the 2007 polls to the YAD president.

Interestingly,to pre-empt Congress move,Bikramjit Singh Majithia had already announced Sarchand as having been expelled from the party.
