School in Theoretical High Energy Physics inaugurated at PU
The department of Science and Technology s Science and Engineering Research Council-sponsored school in Theoretical High Energy Physics was inaugurated at the department of Physics,Panjab University,by the Dean of the Faculty of Science,Prof A S Ahluwalia on Tuesday. The school is also sponsored by the department of Physics under the chairmanship of Prof M M Gupta. It will continue till April 22.
DST project awarded to Prof Mehta
The department of Science and Technology,Government of India,has awarded a research project of Rs 38 lakh for a period of three years to Prof S K Mehta,department of Chemistry,Panjab University. Prof Mehta,Honorary DAAD Advisor and recipient of the prestigious German DAAD fellowship,has made several visits abroad for collaborative research. He has contributed extensively to international scientific literature in the form of more than 100 research publications.
Over 80 principals of various degree colleges affiliated to Panjab University actively participated in the deliberations of the Principals Conference held at Mathematics Auditorium,Panjab University Campus on Tuesday. While Prof S S Bari,Registrar,Panjab University,presided over the conference,Lt General B S Dhaliwal,Advisor (Technical),the Chief Minister,and Fellow,PU,interacted with principals on Interactive Leadership and emphasised the value of initiative,understanding and out-of-box thinking. Mrituyunjay Kumar,a specialist in Library Science,stressed the need to digitise the libraries in the context of globalisation. Professor Keshav Malhotra,Associate Dean,College Development Council,in consonance with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor to bring about transparency and expedite various processes,urged principals of degree colleges to prepare a database regarding examiners so that in future remuneration to examiners could be paid by directly crediting the salary to their accounts. He further requested the principals that all colleges should make payments to the university through Internet/RTGS mode.MC,Admn employees stage protest
Employees of the Municipal Corporation and UT Administration,under the banner of the Chandigarh Subordinate Staff Federation,held a protest outside the
MC building in Sector 17 today. Members demanded fulfillment of their demands,including implementation of 100 per cent Punjab pay scale and service rules,regularisation of services of daily wagers,increasing arrears of second installment of new pay scale before April 15 and filling up vacant posts through promotion.
The protestors also demanded that the condition of five per cent ceiling to provide jobs to a deceaseds family members should be removed.
Water pipes worth Rs 4 lakh stolen
Water pipes belonging to the Municipal Corporation,worth Rs 4 lakh,were reportedly stolen from a site in Hallo Majra on Sunday. According to the police,as many as 11 pipes were stolen and contractor Kulwinder
Singh of the Kulwinder Enterprises,Manimajra,reported the theft to the police today. The police have registered a case of theft in this connection. Kulwinder told the police that each pipe was nearly 20 feet in length and weighed between two to three quintals. It is learnt that miscreants lifted the pipes with cranes and carried them on horse carts.
S K Goel takes charge as District Sessions Judge
New District and Sessions Judge SK Goel,who was earlier posted at Sonepat,took charge at the District Courts on Tuesday. In addition,two additional district and sessions judges also took charge today,comprising Additional District and Sessions Judge Lalit Batra,who has replaced ADSJ Ravi Kumar Sondhi and ADSJ Gurbir Singh,who replaced Raj Shekhar Attri. ADSJ Ram Niwas Bharti,who has replaced ADSJ Raj Rahul Garg,is expected to take charge on Wednesday.
New restrictions on kerosene distribution
The Administration has imposed restrictions on retail distribution of kerosene in the city. According to new rules,card holders with single LPG cylinder will be entitled to draw three litre kerosene per month from their respective disbursing pumps,where their ration card has been registered.
Card holders with single unit (one member) and senior citizens will be entitled to four litre kerosene per month,whereas card holders with two to three units will be entitled to draw upto eight litres per month. Card holders with more than three units will be entitled to draw upto 12 litre kerosene per month.
10 file nominations for district Bar Council elections
On the second day of nominations to the District Bar Council elections,which are scheduled to be held on April 23,as many as 10 candidates filed their nominations. While eight nominations were filed for the post of executive council members,two were filed for the post of treasurer in the Council. Candidates who have filed nominations for the post of executive council member included Vivek Mohan Sharma,Mandeep Singh Saini,Munish Dev Sharma,Manir Ram Verma,Sikanderjit Singh,Rohit Khullar,Raj Kishore and Jagmeet Saini. Harmel Kesari and Ashish Bakshi have filed nominations for the post of treasurer. Wednesday is the last date of filing nominationsand April 9 is the last date for withdrawal.
Altercation between BJP general secretary,advocate over parking
An altercation over parking of a car took place between general secretary of city unit of BJP and an advocate in Sector 37 on Tuesday. The police have received a complaint from both parties. Parking of cars led to an altercation between Arun Sood,BJP general secretary and his neighbour Amandeep Kaur,who accused him of trespassing and roughing her up at her residence this afternoon.
The investigating officer of the case,assistant sub-inspector Gurmeet Singh said Kaur,who is an advocate in the
Punjab and Haryana High Court,alleged that Sood hurled abuses at her and also roughed her up. Sood,however,said Kaur used abusive language and tried to pelt stones on him.
Urbanisation an urgent public health concern,says Patil
On the eve of the World Health Day,which is being observed with the theme Urbanisation and Health for 2010,UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil described urbanisation as an urgent public health concern today. Patil said most of the population lives in cities and the proportion was growing due to natural growth and migration.
To check this,we have to launch a global campaign to spread awareness regarding potential effects of urbanisation on he health of individuals as well as communities.
Punjabi Mahasabha to set up hospital to provide free services for poor
The Punjabi Mahasabha members,while expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for raising a memorial to thousands of Punjabis who laid down their lives during Partition,said they will also set up a multi-speciality hospital in Ambala for the poor and needy. The announcement was made by Mahasabha president Ashok Mehta while addressing the media on Tuesday. He appealed to Punjabis displaced from Pakistan to indicate Punjabi as their mother tongue,while filling up forms during the census 2010.
One killed in accident
Vikram,a resident of village Gadhola under police station Chhapar,was killed when an unidentified truck ran over his motorcycle near village Sipanmajra under Barara sub-division on Monday night. The police have registered a case against the driver of the vehicle.
Ambala Cantt resident alleges threat to life
Ramesh Budhiraja,a resident of DC Road Ambala Cantonment,was threatened by one Praveen Arora and his accomplices,who asked him to vacate the shop that he has been running for the last 38 years in his house. Reportedly,the accused said they will throw away Budhirajas household items on the road to get possession of the shop. Budhiraja,with his family,met the local MLA Anil Vij at the PWD Rest House to request him to intervene into the matter. He also lodged a complaint with the SP and SHO.
BJP MLA wants Kandas removal from Cabinet
BJP Legislative Party leader and local MLA Anil Vij has demanded that Haryana Minister of State for Home Affairs,Gopal Kanda,be removed from his position,as he was abusing his powers and behaving like a gang leader in his Assembly constituency,Sirsa. He alleged during the bandh observed by the the INLD last week,Kanda not only threatened the participating workers but physically assaulted them,which was below the dignity of a minister. Vij said corruption was rampant in implementation of the the MNREGA and identification of BPL card holders. He also regretted that development works were concentrated only in the Rohtak area.
PSEB staff protests against privatisation move
Employees of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) on Tuesday held a massive demonstration in Mohali,Kharar and other parts of the district against the proposed privatisation of the PSEB and enactment of the Electricity Bill 2003. Under the banner of the PSEB Technical Services Union,the protesters held dharnas and rallies in front of their offices and burnt the effigy of the PSEB chairman. The leaders threatened to intensify the stir and go on a long strike if the state government failed to withdraw the Electricity Bill 2003.
Blood donation camp held by The Indian Express
A total of 71 units of blood were collected during a donation camp organised by the Indian Express Blood Donors Club in the office premises,Sector 6 today. It was the 22nd such camp organised by the club. The camp was inaugurated by State Bank of India Chief Manager DPS Chhabra. A team of doctors from the PGI led by Dr Usha Rao was also present. Dr Rao also donated blood. The camp was sponsored by the SBI and Sundarams. The donors were given refreshment and wall clocks.
