The Department of Social Welfare in association with the ladies of Inner-Wheel Club celebrated Rakshabandhan with the delinquent juvenile inmates of the Juvenile Justice Home Sector 25 by tying rakhi’s on the wrists of these inmates. Speaking on the occasion Director Social Welfare Vandana Disodia encouraged the inmates to adopt the healthy and socially desirable means of life and ensured them that as and when the need will arise the department will facilitate them with help in every possible manner in order to attain this objective

Principals’ meet in PU on Aug 26
The UGC-Academic Staff College is organizing a one-day principals’ meet on the theme “Higher Education and its Discontents” on August 26 at ICSSR,Panjab University. The objective is to provide a platform to the academic administrators to discuss the issues which are the root causes of the discontents in the area of higher education and to brainstorm the strategies to tackle these challenges. The principals of the affiliated colleges of Panjab University have been invited to attend the meet and an overwhelming response is being received.

The keynote speaker of the meet will be Prof Mool Chand Sharma,Vice-Chancellor,Central University,Mahendergarh (Haryana),former Vice-Chairman,UGC while Raj Chengappa,Editor-in-Chief,The Tribune,Chandigarh will also interact with the principals to share his thoughts on the theme. The launch of the website of Dean College Development Council,Panjab University and a panel discussion with some of the eminent principals of affiliated colleges of Panjab University would be on the agenda of the meet. according to Professor Shelley Walia,Honorary Director,Academic Staff College,Panjab University one session will be devoted for the recommendations of the principals to enhance the effectiveness of the in-service programmes for teachers in higher education .

Man crushed under train
A man,24,identified as Avtar was killed after he was run over by a train near village Mohri on Ambala- Delhi rail line last night. The body was taken into possession by the GRP. The cause of incident could not be ascertained. The body was sent for a postmortem.

700 women tie rakhi on Vinod Sharma
Over 700 women turned up to celebrate the festival of Rakshabandhan at the residence of former Union Minister and MLA Vinod Sharma at Ambala City today. Sharma greeted them who tied rakhies on his wrist. He offered gifts to each of the women who had tied the sacred thread and assured them of all possible help in solving their problems. Sharma also held an open darbar where people from his constituency met him with their problems. Many of the grievances were redressed on the occasion by the officers present there. He however,assured the people that he would continue to serve them till his life and his doors were always open Large number of people presented their representations for compensation for loss of crops in floods and losses suffered in urban areas.

Five injured in road mishap
Five persons including a 5-year-old child were injured seriously when two motorcycles which they were riding collided with near Kali Bari Mandir Ambala Cantonment today. The incident occurred when motorcycle driven by Mukesh and Deepak residents of Shahbad Markanda skided and rammed another bike coming from the opposite side being driven by Rahul with Deepak and Muskan (5). Rahul’s bike dashed into telephone pole and all three sustained serious injuries. All the injured were rushed to the civil hospital from where they were referred to the PGI Chandigarh in serious condition.

Man mowed down by truck
Shukrain Urea,36,a resident of Jharkhand,was hit by a truck number when he was going on to Parwanoo. He died on the spot. The police have registered a case.
