3-member panel to streamline MC complaint centre
The Municipal Corporation has constituted a three-member committee to streamline the functioning of the complaint centre and suggest measures to make it more resident friendly. The committee would be headed by nominated councillor MPS Chawla and comprise of two officials of the civic body. The councillors of the civic body have raised the issue of the need for popularising the complaint centre among residents. There should be an immediate redressal in case of a complaint. Chawla said they would try to devise a system wherein as soon as a resident calls the complaint centre,the complaint is sent across to the concerned official. The official would receive an SMS telling about the complaint. The progress of the complaint would be tracked. The officials would revert to the complainant to know whether the problem has been taken care of.
The civic body is also contemplating taking a new number for the complaint center that is easy to remember. Talks are also on the anvil
Malayalam language camp concludes
The Malayalam language learning classes,organised by Malayalee Samajam,Mohali,at Kerala Bhawan,Sector 65,Mohali,concluded on Moday. A large number of schoolchildren were part of the summer camp. Benny Thomas,president of Samajam described the language as one of the toughest Indian language to learn having convoluted pronunciations. Although the Keralite children who enrolled for the sessions of Malayalam language were fluent in the language by virtue of it being their mother tongue they lacked reading and writing ability,which was corrected during the special session. While appreciating the enthusiasm and passion of the students who came to learn an additional language even during their holidays,Thomas thanked the teachers Beena Raphel and Kunjhumol Kurian who volunteered for the service without any remuneration.
Wheelchairs donated to GMCH-32
Ten wheelchairs were donated to Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32,by Competent Foundation on Tuesday. Balramji Dass Tandon,former Punjab cabinet minister and president of the Foundation handed over the wheelchairs to Director Principal Prof Raj Bahadur. Foundations Secretary Sanjay Tandon said the idea of donation of wheelchairs came to his mind when his sons leg was fractured and he went to the GMCH for his treatment. At that time no wheelchair was available there and he faced a lot of problem.
Mother-daughter duo falls to death from moving jeep
Mohali: A mother-daughter duo fell to death from a moving Maruti Gypsy on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway-21 near the Ghaggar bridge in Dera Bassi on Tuesday. Subhawati,27,was sitting on the rear seat of the Gypsy while holding her one-year-old daughter Priyanka in her lap and when the driver suddenly applied brakes,Subhawati lost control and fell down with her minor daughter. The seriously injured mother-daughter duo were rushed to GMCH-32 in Chandigarh,where the doctors declared them dead on arrival. Subhawatis husband Chetak Kushwaha,a native of Bihar,told the police that they were on their way to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for getting the postmortem of their close relative Arjun conducted,who had died recently in a road mishap. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
Man sentenced to life term for wifes murder
Ambala: An ex-serviceman,Krishan Jha,accused of murder of his wife was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court here. The court also imposed fine of Rs 35,000 and in default of non-payment he will have to undergo additional sentence.
According to prosecution,Baldevnagar police had recovered body of a woman wrapped in a sheet in a drain passing through motor market,Ambala City,in February 2009. The police had registered a case of murder. During investigation,the police traced found that the accused was none other than deceaseds husband.
On arrest,Krishan admitted the crime stating that he had killed his wife after he developed suspicion about her character. He lived with her at their native village in Bihar. He later deserted her and settled in Baldevnagar. But the deceased traced him and started living with him. To get rid of her,he killed her in February last year.
Murder accused in two-day police custody
A local court today remanded Rampal alias Gattu,arrested yesterday for allegedly murdering Amit,to two days of police custody. The SHO of the Industrial Area police station,Inspector Dilsher Singh,said the weapon with which Gattu killed Amit and the blood stained clothes have been recovered. Gattu told the investigators hat he had dumped the spade and clothes in the jungles of Darua village. The police had cracked the blind murder case yesterday when security guard Rampal was arrested. He killed Amit as he came to steal the brass fixtures near the fountain he was guarding.
Residents protest outside petrol pump in Ambala
Ambala: Huge drama was witnessed outside Oberoi Filling Station in the city on Monday afternoon when the vehicles owners complained that their cars got jammed after refueling diesel from the petrol pump. The agitated residents said the owner had mixed diesel with water. The vehicle owners complained that they had got filled up the tanks of their vehicles and were to embark on a long journey. Some of them complained that their vehicles didnt start after refueling. However,the owner on the intervention of the police,said that his rusted diesel tank had leaked and was filled up with rain water today. The forensic team took samples of diesel for testing. The dispute continued till 5 pm after which the filling station owner agreed to return the money and arranged washing of tanks.
BJP to rake up civic issues in advisory council meet
The Bhartiya Janata Party will raise the issue of law and order in the city in the Advisory Council Meeting to be held on Wednesday. The party is demanding that the situation should be reviewed. The party also plans to take up the issue of issuance of Scheduled Caste certificates that is not being done in the city. The issue of adequate land compensation to farmers would be discussed. Implementation of Right to Education,shortage of electricity and problem of increasing traffic among other things is part of the partys agenda. President of the city unit of the party Sanjay Tandon has written a letter to the UT Administrator Shivraj Patil listing out the partys agenda for the meeting.
Fire in packaging unit,goods worth Rs 1 crore gutted
LALRU: A major fire broke out in the premises of a box board packaging unit located on Jauli link road in Lalru on Tuesday morning,gutting the machinery,material and furniture worth lakhs of rupees. Four fire tenders took around half of the day to completely extinguish the fire. Factory owner Yogesh Jain said a sudden fire broke out in the factory around 4 am on Tuesday,following which the workers called up Dera Bassi Fire Station,from where two fire tenders reached the spot. As the fire was raging in the highly combustible material stocked in the factory,two more tenders,one each from Nahar company and Dappar were called. Four fire tenders took around 6 hours to douse the flames. The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained yet as the factory owner estimated an approximate loss of more than Rs 1 crore. Though the actual loss,he said,can be estimated later.
Abetment to suicide: Man sent to 14-day police custody
Booked in the a case of abetment to suicide,a local court today sent Satik Gulati to 14-day police custody. Satik was arrested yesterday after his wife Renu had set herself on fire outside his Sector-19 residence on Sunday. Based on the complaint lodged by Renus mother,the police had booked Satik as he married her secretly and refused to take her home. This had allegedly prompted Renu to take the extreme step.
