Prime Minister awards city scientist
CHANDIGARH: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh conferred the Scientist of the Year Award on Dr Manjit Singh,associate director of Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL),Chandigarh,on Wednesday during the Technology Day Award ceremony at New Delhi. The award carries a citation and cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. An alumni of the Department of Physics,Panjab University,Chandigarh,Dr Manjit Singh has been working in the field of Detonics of High Explosives and Shock Dynamics.
Citizens group launches Hindi weekly
CHANDIGARH: The Citizens Awareness Group launched its weekly Hindi newspaper,Reader Alert,at the Regional Institute of Cooperative Management,Sector 32,on Wednesday. The newspaper aims to spread awareness about health,sanitation,environment,consumer problems as well as financial literacy. Chairman of the group and editor of the weekly,Surinder Verma,said activities of all voluntary organisations and social activists would be highlighted. Director of the Regional Institute of Cooperative Management,Dr Niraj Pasricha,who was the chief guest on the occasion,stressed the need for an active role of the media for development of the society.
IIT entrance exam: Girls improve their ranks as compared to previous years
CHANDIGARH: In a shift from the usual trend,there is a marked improvement in the ranks of girls in the region. As against the previous year where the top all-India rank among the girls in the tricity was 815,this year it has improved to 493. Also,another girl making it to the IITs is Shiny Singh who has secured AIR 84 (in reserved category). Triya Bhattacharya has secured 493 AIR and considered to be the topper among the girls from the region. In 2009,the highest AIR from the region was secured by Aastha Dua (815) while in 2008 it was secured by Ankita Mittal (1225). Going by this record,it manifests that the girls are certainly emerging as tough competitors for their male counterparts. IIT-JEE has been dominated by boys as more and more of them secure better rankings. Girls lack behind in physics and maths which are not popular among them,this is the reason most of them prefer medical than non-medical, said Triya.
Following Triya is Ashima Singla with 3314 rank and Prakriti with 3317th position.
Ambala doctor commits suicide
AMBALA: Naraingarh Civil Hospital eye surgeon Dr Paramjit Singh allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming sulphas tablets on Wednesday. He was admitted to the hospital in serious condition and later referred to the PGI,Chandigarh. It is learnt that the doctor might have taken the extreme step due to domestic problems. His wife is a government servant.
Body found hanging from tree
Parwanoo: The body of Krishan Dutt,a resident of Karani village near Parwanoo,was found hanging from a tree near his house on Wednesday. According to the police,he slept with his brothers and mother on the roof of their house on Tuesday night. The family found the body in the morning. The deceaseds wife had died a few years ago and he has a daughter. A case has been registered.
28 of 39 milk samples found adulterated
MOHALI: Of the total 39 milk samples tested at a special camp on Wednesday,as many as 28 were found to be adulterated with water. Punjab Dairy Development Board had organised the camp in Phase X. Board Inspectors Yudhveer Singh and Kashmir Singh said the camp was held as part of the statewide drive,for which a special mobile van was made available. The samples were tested and residents were given reports on the spot. So far,15 such camps have already been held while more camps are on the anvil,the inspectors said.
700 treated at medical camp
KHARAR: A free medical health check-up and awareness camp,under the National Health Insurance Scheme,was held at the civil hospital in Kharar on Wednesday for beneficiaries. The camp was inaugurated by Raji P Srivastava,managing director,Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) in the presence of Dr Lehmar Singh,director,PHSC,and Dr P K Shridhar,Civil Surgeon,Mohali. Dr Jai Singh,SMO,Civil Hospital,Kharar,gave an overview of the scheme to the beneficiaries. As many as 200 BPL cardholders and 500 beneficiaries attended the camp. Free medicines were also given to poor patients.
Suspected bomb found in drain
AMBALA: A suspected live bomb was found during the cleaning of the Gudgudia Nallah behind Gandhi Market in Ambala Cantonment on Wednesday. The safai karamcharis said they hit a heavy object while removing garbage. The police was informed who took the bomb in their possession. ASI Kulwant Singh said the bomb weighed around 15 kilogram,adding that it appeared to be a live bomb but could be confirmed only after examination. It is presumed that the bomb might have floated into the overflowing drain from the Army area.
Gang of robbers busted,six arrested
Chandigarh: The UT police today claimed to have busted a gang of six robbers who were planning a dacoity near Colony Number 5. The police claimed to have solved five incidents of robberies and thefts in the city and over 50 incidents of snatching with their arrest. A police patrolling team from the Sector-34 police station got a secret information that a dacoity was being planned near Colony Number 5. The police conducted a raid at a tubewell a little after the midnight and apprehended six persons Roshan Ali,Man Singh and Sharan,all residents of Colony No 5,Bittu Kumar and Pardip Kumar,both residents of Sector 52 and Sanjiv Kumar,a resident of Burail. The police recovered two stolen motorcycles and three daggers from their possession.
Five arrested for harassing girls in Parwanoo
Parwanoo: The police arrested five boys on Wednesday for allegedly harassing girls in Parwanoo,just 50 metres away from the police station. On receiving information,the cops reached and spot and arrested Darshan Singh of Kalka,Dharam Paul of Tipra Kalka,Manoj Kumar of Parwanoo,Sanjeev Kumar of Kalka and Ajai Vaidya of Kalka. The boys were released on bail.
Animation institute opens branch in Kharar
KHARAR: Bringing animation courses at the doorstep of students in Kharar,Firebox Animation Studios has come up with a first-of-its-kind centre FireBox Group of Institute of Information and Technology (FGIIT),in Kharar. Earlier,the students had to travel to Chandigarh and other places for education and training. With its headquarters in Chandigarh,the institute has branches in Chandigarh,Panchkula and Hoshiarpur.
Kala Kendra workshops begin tomorrow
MOHALI: The Pracheen Kala Kendra will be organising production-oriented workshops in theatrical arts and dance for children in the age group of 5-16 years from Friday. To be held at the campus in Sector 71 here daily from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm,the month-long workshops will conclude on June 28 with a closing ceremony,in which all the candidates will participate.
