Mohali village under grip of measles
MOHALI: Manakpur village in Mohali has come under the surveillance of the district health department after several children showed symptoms of measles. A door-to-door survey was conducted in the village on Thursday,where teams of doctors visited 461 houses and examined 287 children,of which 40 were suspected to be suffering from measles against which they were immunised and 99 were given a dose of Vitamin A. Besides,eight children with symptoms of measles coupled with fever were put under active surveillance and given medicines. A special immunisation camp was also held at a brick-kiln in the village,where 35 children were examined and given requisite medication.

Badals’ trial: Court examines evidence
MOHALI: A special court in Mohali on Thursday continued examination and evaluation of evidence that concluded in a high-profile corruption and disproportionate assets case registered against Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal,his son Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal,wife Surinder Badal and others by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB). Special Judge Rajinder Aggarwal posted the matter to May 15.

HDFC manager booked for fraud
KHARAR: A fraud to the tune of Rs 85 lakh has been detected in a local branch of HDFC Bank,the police said on Thursday. Bank manager Rajinder Bhateja has been booked on charges of cheating,forgery and other relevant offences under Sections 420,409,465,467,468 and 471 of the IPC. However,the accused was not arrested. Kharar City SHO Sub-Inspector Tarlochan Singh said Chandigarh head Lalit Batra complained that Bhateja,who lives in Sector 68,Mohali,had allegedly withdrawn Rs 85 lakh from the accounts of two different customers in a fraudulent manner.

Rheumatoid patient walks after 25 years
MOHALI: A 41-year-old school teacher,Reema Vasundhra,walked for the first time in 25 years,after two decades of pain and five years of confinement on a wheelchair. Dr Harsimran Singh,joint replacement surgeon at Fortis Hospital in Mohali,successfully performed the computer navigated total knee replacement surgery on Vasundhra,who suffered from extreme rheumatoid arthritis with deformed knees using a specialised implant from Germany. This rare case is all set to be presented at the annual meet of the British Knee Society. “At a young age of 16 rheumatoid hit me. I spent 25 years in helplessness and pain,” said Vasundhra. “Post surgery,I stood upright for the first time in 25 years and joined school in less than a month’s time. It was a dream comes true for me,” she said.

‘Only 25% graduates considered employable’
MOHALI: A seminar on ‘Gap between the Industry and the Educational Institutes: Causes and Solutions’ was held at Sahibzada Ajit Singh Institute of Information Technology and Research (SASIITR) on Thursday. Aman Ghuman,Location Head (HR),Tata Business Support Systems (TBSS),was the keynote speaker. Over 300 students of MBA and MCA participated. Ghuman said,“Only 25 per cent graduates of the country are considered employable by the organizations,which is very low”.

Teachers educated on child abuse signals
MOHALI: A seminar on ‘Child Abuse in School’ was organised at Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Thursday as part of the outreach programme. Over 100 teachers from various schools participated in the seminar,which was addressed by medical experts from the fields of paediatrics,psychiatry and lab medicine,including Dr Sandip Jain,consultant,paediatrics,Dr Simmi Waraich,consultant,psychiatry and Dr Anita Sharma,head,Department of Lab Medicine and Head,ACTFAST Group.

St Xavier’s School students excel
MOHALI: Students from St Xavier’s School in Mohali are on a winning spree. Aneetinder Kaur of Class IX got the 13th rank in the All India Maths-Science Competition. Manpreet Bangian of Class X and Nikita Charan of Class IX bagged the first position in the Frank Anthony All India Inter-School Debate Competition at Patiala with Nikita Charan getting the first runners-up best speaker’s trophy.
Nikita and Manpreet also bagged the second prize in the declamation contest held at St Xavier’s,Chandigarh.

Neighbour held for killing minor
PATIALA: The police claimed to have solved a blind murder case of a three-year-old boy,Prince,a resident of Babu Singh Colony in Bhadson Road. He was reported missing from his home on April 19. His body was later found wrapped in a plastic bag near his house. One Mohammad Safiq Khan,who lived in the same neighbourhood,has been arrested. SSP R S Khatra said the boy was picked up by the accused while he was playing allegedly with an intention of sexual assault. As the boy started screaming,Khan got scared and gagged the boy with a pillow and hid the body in a box in his house. On April 20,the accused allegedly threw the body of the victim on a vacant plot.

RPF holds 6 for travelling without tickets
Ambala: Six persons were arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Thursday,for travelling in the parcel wagon and SLR attached with the 2231,Lucknow-Chandigarh Express,without tickets. The RPF conducted surprise inspection under directions from the ADRM,Ambala Railway Division,who had been receiving complaints of misuse of parcel wagon and SLR.

Ambala’s new commissioner takes charge
Ambala: New Commissioner of Ambala Division,Anil Kumar,who took over the charge on Wednesday,said his priority included completion of development schemes and projects already in progress. “It will be my endeavour to help solve the problem of shortage of electricity and drinking water,” he said. Kumar expressed his views after taking over the charge at the Circuit House here. He was received by Deputy Commissioner S P Srow,ADC Renu Phoolia,SDM M K Ahuja and other officials from the district. An IAS officer of 1988 batch,Kumar was Commissioner,Higher Education,and has also worked as Deputy Commissioner of several districts in the state. He has joined in Ambala in place of Mohinder Kumar,who has been posted as the Secretary to the Haryana Governor in Chandigarh.

Two in judicial custody under SC/ST Act
Ambala: Two of the 21 persons arrested in the bridegroom beating case of village Sohata were sent to judicial custody after the police produced them in court on Thursday. Rest of them were booked under the SC/ST Act,and they have been absconding since the incident took place on the night of April 27. DSP Barara Ashok Sabherwal said they will be arrested soon.

Defence pension adalat disburses Rs 1.40 lakh
Shimla: A defence pension adalat was organised by the Controllor of Defence Accounts (Pension Disbursement) of Meerut at Peterhoff on Thursday. The court cleared disbursements of Rs 1.40 lakhs from the eligible pensioners. Nand Kishore,additional Controller General of Defence Accounts,New Delhi,gave away cheques to the retired personnel,who had been awaiting their arrears. The court will also be held on Friday to clear more pending cases.

Congress to hold seminar on expulsion of Amarinder from Assembly
AMRITSAR: District Congress Committee (Rural) chief S R S Lally Majithia said the district unit would soon organise a seminar where legal bigwigs and constitutional experts would be invited to debate the issue of ‘uncontitituional expulsion’ of former CM Captain Amarinder Singh from state Assembly. He said the move was a political conspiracy hatched by Badal government to stop Captain from raising significant issues on the floor of the House. He said the act was an unprecedented and undemocratic move to muzzle the voice of the leader. The Supreme Court,he said,had rightfully upheld that the certain clauses in the state Assembly rules and regulations cannot be misused to act against its member. Congress MLA OP Soni and former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa who have announced their support to such a delibrations said they have asked Captain to take out a mass campaign to take the issue to the public. “The expulsion was unconstitutional and illegal and people must know why the political vendetta was initiated against him by the ruling party,” said Dimpa.

Engineering student murdered
Ambala: A second year student of engineering at the MM University was murdered on Wednesday night. Reportedly,Amit Malik was attacked by a group of nine students and a security guard near the Holy bus stand with sticks and sharp weapons while he was going towards the university on his bike with two other classmates. Amit was critically injured and he breathed his last on way to the MM Medical College hospital. His two friends,however,escaped unhurt. The police have registered a case of murder and conspiracy against the accused under different sections of IPC on the complaint of Amit’s brother Arun,a resident of village Bhainswal,Sonepat. University chairman Tarsem Garg regretted the incident. He said violence among students was increasing because police let them off in a short period,further emboldening them.

Student Council elected at Saupin’s School
CHANDIGARH: A few outstanding students of Saupin’s School,Sector 32,were elected to the school council on Thursday. Principal A B Sidhu,who presided over the investiture ceremony,gave badges to members of the council. Lakshya Dhara,Dipleen Kaur and Manik Joshi were elected as head boy,head girl and sports captain,respectively. Nivranshu Sharma,Sasaki Negi,Kishmita Sachdeva,Palki Bhandari were elected captains of the four houses. Also,special scholarships worth Rs 3,06,750 were awarded to the various sports teams of the school.

PTU incubation centres to nurture entrepreneurship skills
CHANDIGARH: “Punjab Technical University (PTU) will launch around 50 incubation centres in its affiliated business schools,with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and skill development so that the students become job providers rather than jobseekers. These incubation centers will not only help them think out of the box but would also help young entrepreneurs arrange money for starting new projects. We have already received the request of Aryans Business School (ABS) to start the first incubation centre which would start functioning from the first week of May.” This was stated by Dr Rajneesh Arora,vice-chancellor,PTU,Jalandhar,after the first convocation of ABS held at the PHD Chamber on Thursday. Around 60 MBA students of the 2007-09 batch were awarded degrees. Dr Anshu Kataria,chairman,Aryans Group,said ABS has already made arrangements for launching the incubation centre to translate student’s ideas into business.

Non-teaching college staff threaten agitation
PATIALA: The non-teaching staff union of private aided colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh has threatened to start a fresh agitation to get their revised payscales implemented. Shamsher Singh,secretary of the state union,after discussing the issue with representatives of various colleges (Modi College,Patiala,Public College Samana,Mata Gujri College Fatehgarh Sahib,DAV College, told the media that the government did not keep its word.

Declare May 1 public holiday,demand trade unions
CHANDIGARH: The Indian National Bank Employees Congress (INBEC) and Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) have appealed the government to declare May 1 (International Labour Day) as a public holiday. In a statement issued on Thursday,Balwant Rai Kapoor,president,INTUC,Punjab and K R Tripathi,president,INBEC,said they have written to the Prime Minister and Union Labour ministry for declaring a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act,1881.

Ambala KV wins city finals of Limca Book of Records Quiz
Ambala: Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1,Ambala Cantonment,won the Ambala city finals of Limca Book of Records Quiz 2010 on Thursday. The competition was held at the Convent of Jesus and Mary School. Young geniuses from the winning school in Ambala will now compete with the winners from 99 other schools in the semi-finals. As many as 206 students from 38 schools participated,of which six schools competed in the city finals — Convent of Jesus and Mary School,S A Jain Sen Model School,Gandhi Memorial National Public School,Kendriya Vidalaya No 1 Ambala Cantonment School,Chaman Vatika Residential Public School and Army Public School. The winning team was felicitated by Kamal Sharma,Manager,Market Executions,Kandhari Beverages Private Limited. CBSE workshop for school principals held
CHANDIGARH: Various heads of educational institutions of Chandigarh and surrounding cities attended the CBSE Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) orientation programme at DAV Model School,Sector 15,on Thursday. The event was organised by the regional office of CBSE located in Panchkula. Education officers P Mani and Srijata Das threw light on the CCE programme initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. They laid emphasis on formative evaluation of learners of Class IX and X.
