Missing man found dead
The body of a 30-year-old man was found hanging from a tree in a forest near Morni Berwala on Wednesday. The victim,identified as Devinder Rawat,allegedly committed suicide after he went missing from his residence in Sector 19. He is survived by his wife. The police had found an abandoned Maruti car (HR-70-A-2370) near the forest and discovered the body a few metres away. An empty bottle of cold drink was also found from the car. Rawats brother,who had earlier lodged a missing complaint with the police,was informed. Rawat worked in a courier firm in Australia and was on a visit to the country. Ruling out foul play,Maneesh Choudhary,superintendent of police,said,Devinder dropped his wife at Mansa Devi temple on Tuesday but did not go home. Earlier too,he had gone missing for a few days but later returned. We had sent the body for a postmortem,which confirmed it was a case of suicide.
24-year-old commits suicide
chandigarh: A 24-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Punjab Colony,Sector 41. The police said the body of Tirlochan Singh was discovered by his father when he entered the room on Wednesday morning. The police have initiated inquest proceedings in the case.
Chandigarh youth held with stolen bike
MOHALI: The local police have arrested a resident of Colony Number 5 in Sector 49,Chandigarh,Rajesh Kumar,and claimed to have recovered a stolen motorcycle from his possession. Sub-Inspector Faqir Fateh Singh was on patrolling duty near Kargil Park T-point in Sector 71 here when he signalled a motorcyclist,coming from Phase 3B2 side,to stop. As the motorcyclist failed to show the vehicle documents,the police official questioned him,following which he confessed that he had stolen the bike from Chandigarh. The police have booked the accused under Section 411 of the IPC. Meanwhile,Arun Kumar of Sector 41-D,Chandigarh,reported to the police that his motorcycle with a Uttar Pradesh registration number was stolen from outside an unit in Industrial Area,Phase VII,here. The police have lodged a case of theft.
Mock drill at Ambala railway station
Ambala: A mock drill by the commandos from Commando Centre at Madhuban in Karnal was held at the Ambala Cantonment railway station to educate people about the safety tactics in the event of any terrorist attack. A team of about 40 commandos led by S-I Suresh Kumar carried out the mock drill.
World TB Day observed
MOHALI: A seminar was organised by the district health department to mark World TB Day at the Civil Hospital in Phase VI on Wednesday. State TB officer Dr P K Shridhar said this year’s theme is ‘innovate to accelerate action’ against TB. District TB officer Dr Gurpreet Singh said most deaths due to TB could be prevented and can be checked simply by generating awareness.
Employees allege corruption by bank chairman
Ambala: The Postal and RMS Employees Welfare Society members held a demonstration in front of the Postal and RMS Employees Cooperative Bank to protest against the alleged irregularities and corrupt practices in the working of the bank. The demonstrators led by former bank chairman S L Goyal gathered at Aggarwal Dharamshala and then marched through the main bazaars to reach the bank office. The demonstrators raised slogans against the chairman Manjit Singh responsible for misappropriation of bank money through fraudulent practices. Goyal in a complaint to the Ambala SP alleged that a fraud of Rs 10.70 lakh was committed in advancing loans which was not paid back. The beneficiaries,Goel alleged,in connivance with the chairman had not made repayment of loans.
Seminar on glaucoma held
PANCHKULA: An awareness seminar on glaucoma was held on Wednesday at an eye institute in Sector 20 as part of the Glaucoma Week celebrations. Nearly 100 people attended the seminar,which was addressed by Dr Guneet Mann. He stressed upon the necessity of regular eye examinations to ensure glaucoma is detected in time and proper treatment is provided to prevent blindness.
People having high intra-ocular pressure,high myopia,family history of glaucoma,diabetes and past eye injury or surgery are at a higher risk.
PU to host seminar on Indias foreign policy
CHANDIGARH: The University School of Open Learning,Department of Political Science,Panjab University,is organising a two-day national seminar on Indian Foreign Policy in the 21st Century: Challenges and Prospects from Thursday at the ICSSR Complex,PU campus,under the aegis of the Ministry of External Affairs and ICSSR,Chandigarh. The meet will be inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti while Professor Devinder Kaushik,chairperson of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies,Kolkata,will deliver the keynote address. P S Sahai,former Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia,Sweden and the former Soviet Russia will give the presidential remarks. Eminent scholars from across the country will also participate in the seminar.
