City girl gets 100 percentile in MAT
Shruti Sood brought laurels to the city by scoring 100 percentile in the Management Aptitude Test,the result of which was declared on Monday. Shruti is a final year student of commerce at SD College in Sector 32. Around 250 institutes across the country,including some government universities accept MAT scores. “I am very happy with my score. During the mock tests,I used to get a good score and expected a good percentile but 100 percentile is more like a dream come true,” she said. In the JMET result declared on Monday,two engineering students from the Punjab Engineering College bagged ranks in the top 20 across India. While Pranav Jaswal grabbed the 11th rank,Ankit Garg stood 19th in the exam. JMET is a management entrance exam jointly conducted by all IITs. This test is for only engineers and postgraduates in the science stream.

Ambala lawyers protest attack on Bar Association member
District court lawyers went on strike on Monday to register their protest against the attack on Bar Association member Sunil Tandon late on Sunday night. Tandon was seriously injured on the head injuries when some youths attacked him when he was on his way to Railway Colony to meet a friend. The cause of the attack was stated to be an old rivalry. The injured was rushed to the civil hospital where his condition was stated to be stable. The Bar Association has demanded immediate arrest of the assailants.

Parwanoo-Kalka Lions Club gets new head
The office-bearers of Lions Club,Parwanoo Kalka,were appointed on Sunday evening at Hotel Windsmoor,Parwanoo. Newly elected president Vineet Goyal and his team were welcomed by District Governor Madhu Aggarwal. Cultural programmes were the highlight of the ceremony with a play on female foeticide and woman empowerment written and directed by Pooja Goel. R K Sood,Multiple Council chairman,was the chief guest. Former president Ashok Jindhal extended his wishes to the new team.

NSS camp inaugurated at govt college
A weeklong NSS camp was inaugurated by Sandeep Hans,Joint Secretary (Finance) and Director,Technical Education,Chandigarh,at the Government Polytechnic for Women,Sector 10D,Chandigarh on Monday. Principal Vina Dosanjh motivated the students to understand the community in which they live and utilise their knowledge and skill in finding practical solutions to social problems. Dr Vikram Rana,state liaison officer,urged NSS volunteers to participate wholeheartedly in the camp and develop a sense of civil responsibility. The function ended with a cultural programme and vote of thanks by programme officers. Meanwhile,a seven-day NSS camp concluded on Monday at GMSSS-44B under the leadership of Programme Officer Sarabjit Kaur. District Education Officer Chanchal Singh was the chief guest on the occasion. Saplings were planted to create awareness about environment conservation. Principal Prem Joshi appealed volunteers to recognise the need to keep the school and surroundings clean. The motto ‘not me but you’ lifted the spirits of young volunteers. Around 50 students visited Burail village to sensitise people about drug addition and female foeticide through rallies and plays.

PU professor chosen fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences
Dr R K Kohli,chairman of the Botany department,Panjab University,has been elected as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences,Bangalore. Dr Kohli has now become eligible for the special honorarium of Rs 15,000 per month,which is granted to any scientist who is a Fellow of two of the four national academies,recognised by UGC/CSIR. Dr Kohli is already a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences,Allahabad,National Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Delhi,Indian Botanical Society,National Environment Science Academy,Delhi,and a few other institutes. Recently,the state government had selected him for the Haryana Vigyan Ratna cash award of Rs 1 lakh,a citation and trophy to be given at a state-level function.
