Book on parks and gardens of Chandigarh released
Chandigarh:Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gen S F Rodrigues (retd) released a book Chandigarh Gardens and Greens at Zakir Rose Garden today. Authored by Dr Satish Narula,the book gives a detailed account of the citys parks and gardens and a vision to develop Chandigarh as a Green City through public-private partnerships. Interacting with the senior officers and landscaping experts on the occasion,General Rodrigues called for a pro-active approach to develop new varieties of roses in the Rose Garden which is being revitalised by adding new features and infrastructure support system. He emphasised on the need for launching a programme to develop hybrid roses. In his foreword in the book,General Rodrigues mentioned that with government and public participation and efforts of the greening agencies,the citys green cover rose to 37.5 per cent in 2007 making it the greenest city of Asia. Jean Rodrigues,UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas,Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agriculture University,Ludhiana ,Dr Manjit Singh Kang,Chief Engineer Surinder Pal and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
Carmel Convent adopts government school in Kaimbwala
CHANDIGARH:Under the partner initiative programme,Carmel Convent School,Sector 9,has adopted the government school in Kaimbwala.The school has been organising various activities to help the school when required.To celebrate the upcoming childrens day,students of Class XII will organise a sports day for the students of the government school on Thursday. The prizes will also be sponsored by the students of Carmel Convent School.
Tributes paid to Capt Rohit Kaushal on his death anniversary
CHANDIGARH:Rich tributes were paid to Captain Rohit Kaushal on his 14th martyrdom day observed at his ancestral village in Jalauli on Wednesday. Capt Kaushal had made the supreme sacrifice while fighting militants in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on November 11,1995. A large number of army officers and civilians had gathered at the Captains Memorial to pay homage to the valiant spirit of the martyr.
A guard of honour was presented to the brave Captain by the Jawans of 18 Punjab Battalion,to which the Captain belonged.
Woman dies,man injured in road mishap
DERA BASSI: Veena Rani (48),a resident of Mubarikpur in Dera Bassi,died while her husband Gulshan Kumar,in his early 50s,sustained serious injuries in a road accident on the Mubarikpur Camp road on late Tuesday evening.
According to sources,the accident took place around 8.30 pm when the couple was on their way back from Chandigarh. Their motorcycle collided with a buffalo that suddenly came in the way. The were rushed to the civil hospital in Dera Bassi where Veena was declared dead on arrival while Gulshan is still struggling for life.
