MOHALI:
In the wake of the Punjab bandh call given by various radical Sikh organisations,most private schools and some private banks in Mohali have declared a holiday on Tuesday. Yadavindra Public School,Lawerance Public Senior Secondary School,Shivalik Public School,St Solider’s International School,Paragon Senior Secondary School,Sant Isher Singh Public School,Swami Ram Tirtha Public School,Gem Public School and Dashmesh Public School will remain closed. However,government schools,colleges and offices will remain open as the state government has not declared a holiday.

RJD city chief writes letter to PM,Sonia Gandhi
Chandigarh:
In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi,the Rashtriya Janta Dal has sought a clarification from both on the remarks of Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal that the appointment of General S F Rodrigues (Retd) as Punjab Governor and UT Administrator was a mistake of the Congress.

RJD president Ravinder Krishan stressed that Bansal was a man of dictatorial attitude. “In the last five years,he has targeted former DC Arun Kumar and two Municipal Commissioners P S Aujla and Dr Roshan Sunkaria. Bansal adopts the same policy within the local Congress unit. His supporters have often criticized the president of the local unit B B Behl.”

Tea vendor assaulted for refusing youths to smoke near his vend
MOHALI:
A tea vendor,Arjun Mehto,was seriously injured after he refused some youngsters to smoke at his vend,the police said. The victim was rushed to PGIMER in Chandigarh where he was battling for life. Mehto told the police that he ran a tea shop in Desumajra village near here and around 9 pm on Monday night when he along with his son was going back home after closing down their shop,a group of youngsters,whom he had refused to smoke in his shop,waylaid him and thrashed him mercilessly for not allowing them to smoke. Before the victim and his son could seek help,the assailants fled the spot after threatening the victim with dire consequences.

The police have lodged a case under Sections 323,341,506 and 34 of the IPC against the unknown assailants.

Three vehicles stolen from Mohali
MOHALI:
Three vehicles were stolen from different parts of Mohali during the past 24 hours,the police said on Monday. Sukhbir Singh of Phase VII reported the theft of his Mahindra Balero jeep parked outside his house last night while Manjit Singh of Phase-I lost his Tata Indica car parked outside his house. A motorcycle of Avtar Singh of Sector 70 was stolen from the parking lot of Sector-71 market. The police have lodged separate cases of theft.

Family taken ill after being ‘poisoned’ by neighbour
AMBALA:
Five members of a family,including two children,were taken ill after allegedly being poisoned by a woman in their neighbourhood in Sarangpur village on Monday.

The children,in the age group of 3 to 5 years,were rushed to the civil hospital after their condition started deteriorating. They are now stated to be out of danger while other family members are undergoing treatment.

It was alleged that Kailasho,wife of one Chuhar Singh,offered prasad laced with poison to the family in order to settle scores with the wife of Balbir Singh. Surjit,Balbir’s brother,lodged a complaint with the police. Investigations are on.

One dies,four injured in road accident
AMBALA:
One person died while four others were injured in a road accident in Ambala City on Monday. The deceased,identified as Pawan Kumar,was a resident of Delhi.

Pawan was returning from Punjab with other family members after attending a function. The car was hit by a tanker near the Sultanpur police barrier on the Ambala-Chandigarh road. Two occupants of the car were referred to the PGI Chandigarh while two others identified as Kuldip and Shekhar were admitted to the civil hospital.

Railways to observe Vigilance Week
AMBALA:
The Railways will observe an anti-corruption and vigilance week from November 3 to 7. Ambala Division ADRM R K Saxena stated that the drive was aimed to keep a check on corruption and also spread awareness among rail users to help the Railways identify corrupt officials.

He added that all stations under the division would be covered under the drive.

A meeting of senior officials,including senior commercial divisional manager Karan Singh,RPF Commandant S Z Khan,ADCM Meena and others was also convened.
