Highway blocked after auto unions clash
The Chandigarh-Hisar National Highway remained blocked on Saturday after members of the Auto Drivers Union,headed by Ashok Boondi,laid siege on the road at Manav Chowk in Ambala City. A dispute with a rival union,headed by Birender Niku,was the bone of contention. The situation aggravated when Dalip Chawla Bitoo,former media coordinator to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,came to the aid of the Niku group. Both the groups clashed with each other with Boondi lodging a complaint against the opposite group. They also alleged that Chawla had been sheltering the rival group by influencing the police. The police reached the spot and assured of action against Niku and Chawla after investigation.
Celebrations mark Mothers Day in schools
MOHALI: Elaborate celebrations marked Mothers Day at various tricity schools on Saturday. A blood donation camp was organised at Lawrence Public Senior Secondary School. At Gian Jyoti Global School,Phase II,students made beautiful gifts for their mothers to express their love and affection. A cooking competition for mothers was the main attraction. At Shivalik Public School,Phase VI,senior students from Class VII-XII performed to enliven the day. Anees School,Sector 69,Angels School in Zirakpur,Amravati Vidyalaya in Panchkula and The Gurukul,Sector 20,Panchkula,also organised special functions.
Seminar held at Mohali institute
MOHALI: A seminar on Changing management practices in a new and globalised world was organised by Sahibzada Ajit Singh Institute of Information Technology and Research (SASIITR) in Mohali on Saturday. Over 50 faculty members from the department of Management and Information Technology participated. On the occasion,Dr Bateshwar Singh spoke on the changes in the financial aspects of management practices with specific reference to International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS). Jasjit Mann gave an illustrious presentation on the risks and the solutions involved in international business. Harpominderjit Kaur spoke on the cultural diversity which affects management practices throughout the world.
200 examined at free health camp
MOHALI: Around 200 persons were examined and treated for various ailments by a team of doctors at a free medical check-up camp organised by the Mohali Press Club at its office in Phase IV here on Saturday. Deputy Commissioner Prabhjot Singh Mand and District Planning Committee Chairman N K Sharma were the special guests,who were also examined. Bone marrow density test,ECG and other clinical examinations were also offered free of cost to needy patients.
NGO holds health camp for needy children
MOHALI: Members of NGO Nanhe Kadam conducted a health camp at Jeevan Mukt Nishulk Vidyalaya,Jagatpura village,near Sector 48,Mohali,on Saturday. The camp began with an interactive session in which students were apprised of the importance of personal hygiene and nutrition. The interactive session was followed by a medical check up of around 300 children. Medicines were also provided free of cost. The Jeevan Mukt Nishulk Vidyalaya was started in 2007,with an aim to provide free and quality education to underprivileged children. They also run stitching classes for women in the evening. The initiative is the brainchild of Mansa Ram Ahuja,founder president of the Jivan Mukt mission,which has over 30 centres,including Chandigarh,Panchkula,Mohali,Derabassi and Ludhiana.
240 get degrees at Ambala college
AMBALA: Nearly 240 graduates of the 2008-09 batch were conferred degrees at the first convocation of the College of Engineering and Applied Research,Devsthali Mithapur,Ambala,on Saturday. Registrar of Kurukshetra University,Dr Raghuvendra Tanwar,was the chief guest. College director,J K Sharma,read out the annual report.
Blood donation camp at PGI
CHANDIGARH: Over 100 resident doctors donated blood at a camp organised at the Advanced Paediatric Centre,PGI,on Saturday. As per the tradition of the paediatrics department,the outgoing MD doctors organise a blood donation camp twice a year. The donors included volunteers from the National Institute of Nursing Education,relatives of patients and other staff members.
Jasbir Kaur is new principal of Gian Sagar Medical College
PATIALA: Jasbir Kaur,professor and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia,in Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital,took over as the new principal on Saturday. Prior to joining the institute,Kaur was working as professor of anaesthesia at the Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital in Patiala. She was felicitated by A S Sekhon,dean of the Gian Sagar group of colleges. Senior faculty members congratulated her.
Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association gets new chief
CHANDIGARH: Brig Keshav Chandra (Retd) took over as president of the Chandigarh Senior Citizens Association for a term of two years. He promised to give support to open sector-based chapters and organise more functions.
