21 injured as bus turns turtle in Solan
SHIMLA: As many as 21 passengers sustained injuries when the bus in which they were travelling turned turtle on the road in Garkhal of Solan district on Thursday. The private bus carrying 41 passengers was on its way from Nalagarh to Solan. The injured have been admitted in hospitals. The police said “dislodging of the rear wheels” caused the accident. They have registered a case against the bus operator for negligence.

Punjab FM: State registered 15 pc GSDP
JALANDHAR: Despite the global recession Punjab registered a 15 per cent Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) in the last year,said state Finance Minister Manpreet Badal on Thursday. He was here to inaugurate the website of the local unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA). Talking to the mediapersons,he said the economic growth in the last three years had been satisfactory. The state received six bumper crops consecutively and the agriculture sector contributed nearly 30 per cent to the state’s economy.

GNDU constitutes sexual harassment complaints committee
AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) vice-chancellor,Prof A S Brar on Thursday constituted a Sexual Harassment Complaints Committee to deal with the cases of sexual harassment on campus and its regional centres. Dr Inderjit Singh,registrar of the university,said Dr Tejinder Kaur Maan of the Punjabi Department,GNDU,Regional Campus,Jalandhar,has been appointed as the chairperson of the committee. Dr Usha Kapoor,officiating principal,GNDU college,Jalandhar; Dr Amritpal from Library and Information Department; Dr Saroj Bala from Botanical and Environmental Sciences,Dr Inderjit Kaur,president,Pingalwara,Amritsar; dean,academic affairs; registrar; president and secretary of the GNDU Teachers’ Association are other members of the committee.

Singer accused of plagiarism
FEROZEPUR: Tarlok Singh Judge,a city-based ghazal writer,has threatened to sue singer Satinder Sartaj if the latter refuses to apologise publicly for using his lyrics “without mentioning my name”. Judge said: “Sartaj has been singing parts of my ghazals claiming to be his,by changing words here and there.” He said he got to know of this after he pasted his couplets on Facebook and a friend told him that this was Sartaj’s ghazal. Judge claimed that the ghazal was part of his collection published in 1994 and had been separately published in a magazine way back in 1978. He accused the singer of using other writers’ work too. Judge,who is also a member judge of the local consumer court,added: “I took up the matter with the singer and sought a public apology from him and acknowledgement for the writers. This is a question of ethics. But Sartaj did not bother to do this despite a detailed conversation on March 29 where he admitted that he had sung my ghazal. I have announced it publicly that he has 15 days to apologise,beginning April 2,failing which I will go to court.”Despite repeated attempts,Sartaj could not be contacted. Sources close to him said he was abroad.

Hearing adjourned in corruption case against Virk
MOHALI: A special court in Mohali once again adjourned the arguments on consideration of prosecution sanction and framing of charges against former Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra and Punjab Sarbdeep Singh Virk in a high-profile corruption,disproportionate assets and criminal case on Thursday. The retired senior IPS officer,through his counsel A S Sukhija,moved a plea in the court of Special Judge S K Garg submitting that a matter pertaining to the same case was pending before the Punjab and Haryana High Court,which has fixed the next date of hearing on April 19. It was requested that the case before the trial court may be adjourned till the High Court decision. Accepting the plea,the Special Court fixed May 1 as the next date of hearing.

Now,paid parking at Kalka railway station
PARWANOO: From now on,passengers will have to pay a parking fee at the Kalka railway station. The parking contract of nearly Rs 3 lakh for there months was bagged by the Kalka Taxi Union. The charges have been fixed at Rs 30 for six hours for cars. An additional Rs 10 will be charged after six hours. Heavy vehicles will have to pay Rs 40 for six hours and Rs 50 beyond that. Parking rates for scooters has been kept at Rs 5.

Free yoga workshop to be held in Sector 44
CHANDIGARH: To mark the 44th Founder’s Day celebrations of the Bhartiya Yog Sansthan,a yoga workshop will be held at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School,Sector 44,Chandigarh on April 11 from 5:30 am onwards. Sansthan founder Prakash Lal will apprise the people about the benefits of yoga in the two-hour workshop. Yoga followers from over 100 centres across the tri-city and its periphery are expected to participate in the free workshop.

Sports stadium to come up in Sohana
MOHALI: A modern sports stadium would come up in Sohana near Mohali. A sum of Rs 20 lakh would be spent to develop 4.5 acres of land,under a village pond,into a sports stadium and park. District Planning Committee Chairman N K Sharma announced this while inspecting the proposed stadium site in Sohana on Thursday. Sharma said construction would begin within a week. He added that the project would be undertaken under the new sports policy prepared by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal,who also holds the sports portfolio,for the uplift of facilities at the grassroots level. “Similar stadiums would be developed in other rural areas of the district as well,” Sharma said,adding that Sohana,Mauli,Madanpur,Balongi,Manauli and other villages in the vicinity of Mohali would get potable water supply and sewerage facilities.

Patil reviews progress of Beant Singh Memorial
CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh Administration is going to rope in interior designers for better designing of the Beant Singh Memorial and Chandigarh Centre for Performing and Visual Arts,Sector 42. During a visit to the memorial on Thursday,UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil asked officials to complete the construction of the building soon. Patil said the library in the memorial should be built on modern lines in all respects. He also asked officials to replace the wooden bookshelves with perforated steel shelves and install a air-conditioning system. He also stressed on constructing an auditorium where national and international conferences could be organised. Audio and video labs in the library were also on the wishlist of Patil.

PU all set for Vice-President’s visit
CHANDIGARH: The Panjab University is all set for Vice-President M Hamid Ansari’s visit on Friday. He,along with PU Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti,will deliver the Dr V N Tewari Memorial Lecture at the university auditorium at 11:30 am. Other delegates,including Governor of Punjab and Administrator,UT Chandigarh Shivraj Patil,Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal and Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda,will also be present on the occasion. Final rehearsal was completed at the venue today. Student Welfare Dean Naval Kishore said there was no entry criteria for the lecture and the university wanted everybody interested to attend. “The university auditorium has a capacity of 840. For those who would not be able to be accommodated in the auditorium,special plasma screen has been installed outside the auditorium,” he said.

Residents’ body seeks changes in CHB houses
CHANDIGARH: A delegation of Chandigarh Housing Board Residents’ Federation led by councillors Jagjit Singh Kang and Harjinder Kaur met UT Finance Secretary and CHB chairman to put forth their demands including permission to construct a bathroom on first floor to 3,000 LIG duplex house owners. Relaxation of zoning rules and allowing coverage of the void on the first floor in the stair hall in HIG houses was also sought.

PU law reappear exam postponed
CHANDIGARH: The reappear examination of BA LLB (Hons) at Panjab University scheduled from April 9 to 15 has been postponed till the conclusion of the regular exams i.e. May 14. New dates will be notified later,according to the Controller of Examinations.

Admn,NGOs join hands to eradicate social evils
CHANDIGARH: Serious issues like drug addiction and implementation of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act were discussed during a meeting of the UT Administration and NGOs,under the Partnership Initiative Programme. The meeting was chaired by Dr Manjit Singh Bains,director,Health Family Welfare,along with Dr Rajeev Vadehra,district family welfare officer. It was attended by representatives of Sai Tara Ummat Foundation,Citizens Forum on Human Rights,Citizen Awareness Group and FOSWAC. An effort was made to formulate a plan to eradicate various evils from the society. Work of the NGOs was reviewed and they were appreciated for generating awareness about female foeticide by conducting silent demonstrations outside the ultrasound centres. They were also encouraged to come up with new ventures in the field of health.
