IMD issues orange alert for fog and cold wave in 22 districts of Punjab and Haryana; visibility likely to be down to zero

The ongoing snowfall in the mountains will lead to a significant drop in temperatures across Punjab and Haryana, according to the IMD.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for fog and cold wave in 22 districts of Punjab and Haryana for Monday due to an ongoing cyclone circulation in the region. Visibility could be severely affected, with some areas potentially experiencing fog so thick that visibility may drop to zero, as per the weather department.

IMD Chandigarh reported that the impact of ongoing snowfall in the mountains will extend to Punjab and Chandigarh, leading to a significant drop in temperatures across the region. Some of the Punjab and Haryana districts where orange alert has been issued are as follows:

  • Hisar
  • Charkhi Dadri
  • Rewari
  • Bhiwani
  • Mahendergarh
  • Jhajjar
  • Sirsa
  • Rohtak
  • Gurugram

Meanwhile, due to fog, a yellow alert has been issued for the rest of the 23 districts of the states and their joint capital, Chandigarh.

According to the weather department, these conditions are expected to persist until January 3, with temperatures in Punjab potentially dropping to 3 degrees Celsius over the next five days. However, Chandigarh is unlikely to see drastic temperature changes.

In the last few days, rain was reported in several areas of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Two western disturbances are expected to impact the region between January 1 and January 6. These disturbances will bring rain to the western Himalayan range and may also extend to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and the plains. As a result, temperatures in Punjab and Chandigarh are likely to drop again.

In Haryana, the average maximum temperature fell by 1.2 degrees on Sunday. However, this was still appreciably below normal by 4.5 degrees. The highest maximum temperature recorded in the state on Sunday was 22.5 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the average maximum temperature in Punjab rose by 2 degrees, but it remained 2.3 degrees below normal. The highest maximum temperature recorded in the state was 21.3 degrees Celsius at Sri Anandpur Sahib.

Weather forecast in major Punjab cities for Monday

  • Patiala: Morning fog, clear skies by afternoon. Temperature is expected to range between 9 and 18 degrees Celsius.
  • Amritsar: Cold wave warning. Temperature is expected to be between 8 and 16 degrees Celsius.
  • Jalandhar: Cold wave warning. Temperature is expected to be between 8 and 18 degrees Celsius.
  • Ludhiana: Morning fog, clear skies by afternoon. Temperature is expected between 7 and 18 degrees Celsius.
  • Mohali: Morning fog, clear skies by afternoon. Temperature is expected between 10 and 19 degrees Celsius.

The meteorological department has urged the public to stay updated with weather warnings and advisories. It advised them to take necessary precautions, especially while travelling, due to the reduced visibility caused by dense fog.
