To help patients with the rare genetic disorder muscular dystrophy the Indian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (IAMD) opened a specialised physiotherapy centre on Friday.
Located inside the Government Institute of Mentally Retarded Children in Sector-32 here,the centre will be managed by the Chandigarh chapter of the IAMD.
Muscular Dystrophy is a rare disorder,which is progressive in nature and causes irreversible degeneration of muscles in the human body. As per estimates,over 50 familes in the city are affected with the disorder,while the nations figures hovers around four lakh patients.
IAMD Secretary Vipan Goyal told Newsline that the centre,the first-of-its-kind free facility for patients in the country built entirely by the IAMD,has two rooms and is equipped with all modern facilities.
The centre will benefit patients not only from the city and the surrounding areas but also those coming from Punjab,Himachal,Haryana and other states, said Goyal on the sidelines of the IAMD coglomeration of the affected patients and their families.
Affected with MD himself for the last several years,Goyal displayed the exuberance of getting the much-needed centre for patients. He also went around the centre located on the first floor and displayed the equipment available. The main reason for the choice of this institute was the fact that it has the facility of the ramp and the affected people coming for physiotherapy can access the place easily, explained Goyal.
The centre,which has completely been set up by the IAMD,has come up at the cost of Rs 5 lakh and has trained physiotherapist to teach exercises. Any patient suffering from MD can avail himself of the facility.
The morning gathering drew a huge crowd of patients and their family members as patients,majority of them wheelchair bound,sang inspirational and devotional songs to keep alive the confidence and hope of others.
The centre was formally inaugurated in the afternoon by Home Secretary UT Ram Niwas,while Prof Raj Bahadur,Director of GMCH,Sector 32,was also present.
