A 20-year-old woman threatened to commit suicide at the police headquarters on Monday in protest against alleged police inaction in tracing her missing husband. But the Yamunanagar resident dropped her aggressive stance after Inspector General of Police Dr R P Singh personally assured her of taking up the matter.
Neelam, accompanied by her in-laws,came to the headquarters around 2 pm and gave a written representation to the Director General of Police, alleging that the police did not do enough to trace her husband,Kuldeep (24),who went missing on May 18. When the family met the IG Dr Singh,Neelam told him that she would end her life if the police did not find her husband: this she said even to the mediapersons present in the headquarters.
The IG told her that the police would take about two weeks time to investigate the matter, and Neelam said she was willing to wait for a month till the probe is complete.
Neelam accused Kuldeep’s employer,Kewal Kumar, who runs a tent house in Yamunanagar,of having a role behind her husband’s disappearance. Giving details of the case, she said that Kuldeep had left for work around 8 am on the fateful day and never returned.
He used to come back by nine everyday and always called if he were to get late. When he did not turn up even the following day,we went to the tent house and inquired his whereabouts, but did not get any satisfactory reply. The police also refused to register a complaint, saying that he would come back soon. It was only after Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar intervened that a missing complaint was registered on May 30, claimed Mamchand,Kuldeep’s father, who is a landlord in Tigda village. However,he could not clearly answer why he suspected Kewal Kumar’s involvement in the matter.
The family also alleged that the day Kuldeep went missing, they received a call from his cellphone. I could not speak to him,but could hear a lot of noise in the background. It seemed a heated exchange was on between some people. The call ended and we couldn’t reconnect, Mamchand said.
Dismissing any speculation of Kuldeep committing suicide or being murdered, the family said that though the police were able to recover his motorcycle from a canal near Panjupur village, his body has not been found. Neelam and Kuldeep have a seven-month-old daughter.
IG Singh said that the case would be handed over to the Crime Investigation Agency. He also urged the woman to not take an extreme step as this was the first time that the family had come to the headquarters with the complaint and that the police needed time to complete the probe. To this, the family said that they have been running from pillar to post without much luck, and which is why Neelam had suicidal thoughts.
