The members of the CTU Workers Union held a protest demanding that the UT Administration expedite the process of purchasing new buses. The proposal has been lingering for several months.
The union members alleged that due to lack of co-ordination between the officials, the purchase was being delayed. The funds that were allocated by the Centre in the last financial year for the purpose lapsed due to this. The Administration has to purchase around 90 buses as the fleet is old and several buses have been condemned.
The tenders were called earlier this year and Volvo was shortlisted. However with the cost of purchasing Volvo buses being high, the logistics have not been worked out till now. The members of the Union stated that due to the shortage of buses, the buses of the long route have been shifted to the local routes.
They further demanded that the recruitment of drivers and conductors be held at the earliest. The process for recruitment was halted before the written exam could be conducted even though the shortlisting was done.
