The Ludhiana police Tuesday recovered at least 350 boxes of firecrackers illegally stored in a godown in a residential area on Ludhiana-Malerkotla Road.
Police said that the firecrackers, worth at least Rs 10 lakh, were seized at Begoana and one person, Harish Singh, a resident of Bank Colony, was arrested in this connection.
Police said that the godown was owned by Sandeep Kaur, an NRI woman who lives in the UK, and the accused had taken it on rent for Rs 15,000 a month.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that the accused did not possess any licence to store the explosive items nor took safety measures while storing the hazardous materials. Storing the firecrackers in a residential area might have led to a major tragedy, he added.
Police said that it is being probed if any of the accused had political connections as the godown had displayed a huge hoarding of some politicians from the Congress party, including MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, among others, on its roof.
The police are yet to arrest Harish Singh’s aides – Rajvir Singh of Jawahar Camp and Bobby of Sangrur.
Locals informed the police that five trucks were unloaded at the godown a few days ago, under the false claim that they contained biscuits and other gifts for Diwali.
Harish Singh told police that he had bought firecrackers from Bobby for Rs 8 lakh, which the latter had stored in different godowns in Dhuri. The plan was to sell them to shopkeepers for Rs 50 lakh.
The police have registered a case under sections 286, 336 of IPC and section 9(b)2 of the Explosives Act at Sadar police station.
