The students of University Institute of Hotel Management (UIHMT),Panjab University, and members of Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) staged a protest outside the Vice-Chancellors office on Tuesday afternoon. The students were protesting against the university administration and its conduct of affairs for not issuing the roll numbers. The protest was later called off by the students after an assurance was given by the Dean Student Welfare Naval Kishore.
These were the students of the second semester of the institute. According to the rules, any student who gets compartment in three subjects of one semester,is not eligible to sit for the exams of the next semester. The students said the first semester exams were held on December 2009 but the result was announced last week on April 16. The exams for the second semester are scheduled from April 23 and there are eight students whose roll numbers have been blocked.
The students complained that with so little time for the exams to start, they do not even have time to apply for re-evaluation. They also questioned as to why are they given admissions to the second semester before the results are declared.
The university authorities should either declare the results in time or change the rule to clearing five-six subjects in each year instead of each semester, said Udey Singh Wirring,PUSU president.
