GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS in the city have been put on alert for any exigency that may arise on the day of Diwali. While the three major hospitals have deployed additional staff, ambulances will remain available for the city residents as well.
Dr G Dewan, Deputy Medical Superintendent, GMSH, Sector 16, told Chandigarh Newsline that the emergency department had been put on alert for three days on the occasion of Diwali. “On Diwali day, the staff will be put on alert. As a matter of routine, we don’t have eye specialty after morning shift. But during Diwali doctors from ophthalmology will be available round the clock for three days to meet any exigency arising out of fire incidents,” he said. “The material required to deal with burn injury has been made available in the casualty department in a sufficient quantity, so that patients don’t have to bring anything from the market.”

According to the health officials, 176 cases of burn injuries were reported in various government hospitals last year. The city had reported 144 cases in 2013 and 101 cases in 2012.
Dr Dewan said that schools and teachers could play a major role by educating children not to use crackers. “However, if the crackers are to be used, it should be ensured that the children don’t handle the crackers,” he said.
He added, “The ambulance strength has been increased, and they will be made available on 102 or 2782457, where people can call in any emergency during Diwali.”
At the PGIMER, a team of doctors has been deputed at the emergency centre of the Advanced Eye Centre. “There will be an additional team for three days, who will deal with the burn injury cases during Diwali,” said a senior doctor from the Advance Eye Centre at PGI. Officials of the GMCH, Sector 32, also confirmed to Chandigarh Newsline that additional staff and ambulances had been made available on the day of Diwali.
