This 100-year-old home spells nostalgia

It takes you to an era gone by,to the years of the Raj,British design, landscaping, interiors… Hundred years old, spread over 2.27 acres, the Kharga House, residence of Lt Gen Chetinder Singh, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 2 Corps at Ambala is a home filled with beautiful memories, warmth and history. The home, which completed 100 years this year is special for the family for many reasons,it’s here that Lt Gen Chetinder,as a young Captain, met his wife Ruby for the first time. And in the front lawns of this stately house, the two got married in the early ’70s. At that time,it was the home of Ruby’s father Maj Gen MS Brar, the Area Commander here. “Every nook and corner of this place is especial,it’s been the first home for our two daughters. When I came back to this house after my husband took over 2 Corps,it was a walk down memory lane — to my childhood,my parents, the wonderful moments spent here,” recalls Ruby. Now called the Kharga House, the house and the adjoining Angora Farm were constructed in 1908-1909 as “Captains’ Quarters for two single officers.” There have been modifications and extensions in the original building, but the design and concept hasn’t been altered. As the bungalow completes a century this year, the Ambala chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is keen that it should be given heritage status. According to Brig GS Lamba,Convenor of the Ambala chapter, any building which is over 100 years old can be considered as heritage property. “We will make this recommendation to the local Cantonment authorities, who can form a committee to consider it,” said Brig Lamba. Here’s to history.
