Loud launch
After over 40 ambulances were flagged off from The Ridge, the fleet sped through Shimla town blaring sirens, making their way to respective districts. This misuse of emergency sirens by empty ambulances to announce the launch of the free scheme did not go down well with many,as it created panic among the locals who came out on to the streets fearing a major mishap. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, however, dismissed the criticism by Congress of the launch ahead of elections, saying some people have the habit of finding a problem with everything.
Dry day on New Year eve
Due to the elections to 48 urban local bodies in Himachal Pradesh on January 1,the New Years eve will be a dry day in many parts of the state. While the states tourism industry looks for a brisk business during the year end holiday season after December 25,the panchayat polls from December 28 to 30 in three phases that will result in three consecutive dry days from December 27 onwards are set play a major spoilsport for the liquor business. The police have already sounded an alert against inter-state smuggling of liquor during this time.
On poll duty and loving it
Himachal Administrative Services (HAS) officers are enjoying the power during this election after being posted as observers in various districts. Though many of them will have to stay away from family during this peak holiday season, for most of them the postings have worked as a soothing balm for their heartburn after the state government started appointing forest services and police services officers on key posts in policy making departments in the Secretariat, which has always been a bastion of Indian Administrative Services (IAS) or HAS officers.
