His simple looks,partially grey beard and a shawl over right-shoulder may be deceptive,but Himachal Pradesh University Vice-Chancellor A D N Vajpayee has started a revolution in the strike-ridden,highly politicised campus. His first step has been to free the university campus from politics and he has banned students from wearing badges showing their political affiliations. Next on his agenda is to debar teachers floating political cells—a trend prevalent for years.

Singh was a real ‘King’

The demise of three-time MLA and former minister Hari Narain Saini,BJP’s lone Sikh face in the Assembly,has pained most politicians and citizens. A senior BJP politician,who returned after attending Saini’s cremation,recalled a dialogue from the film “Singh is King” and reminisced that Saini was never hesitant to speak the truth and that’s the reason he remained a popular and honest gentleman.

Teacher or politician

Education Minister Ishwar Dass Dhiman retired as a head master before he joined politics. But quiz the 77-year-old politician which was a better job—being a teacher or becoming a politician—Dhiman was quick to retort. “I was very happy in the teacher’s job. And,you know why? My job used to end after the school is over,but as a minister I don’t have fixed working hours.”

SMS ka funda

Politicians here are getting increasingly hooked to new medium of communication like social networking and group SMSes. Last week,Union Minister and former chief minister Virbhadra Singh celebrated his 77th birthday. His Facebook page was flooded with greetings and the mobile phone did not stop buzzing. But what surprised the people of the town was a message flashing on their cellphones that read: “Thanks for your blessing,and Best Wishes.” Well,‘Raja Sahib’ was generous enough to respond to even those who were not aware of his birthday,forget sending him a birthday wish.
