Focus on maximum visibility of uniformed personnel a HP Police strengthens security; Market associations gave bandh call

The Himachal Pradesh Police Wednesday beefed up the security across the state, especially in Chamba and Kangra districts which borders Jammu and Kashmir, with focus on ensuring maximum visibility of uniformed personnel at tourist destinations, religious places, following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists. Directions to this effect were issued to all the Superintendents of Police from the office of Director General of Police (DGP) Atul Verma.

However, different market associations across Himachal Pradesh gave a call of bandh till 1pm for Thursday. Markets across the state included Shimla, Kullu, Solan, Bilaspur etc were remained closed till 1pm today. Shimla Beopar Mandal President Sumesh Sharma said, “The bandh call was given to express solidarity with the kin of 26 victims who post their lives in the cowardly terrorist attack. The bandh is also expressed our anger.” Markets at Mall Road, Lower Bazaar, Middle Bazaar, Ram Nagar, Chotta Shimla and other parts of the capital of the state were closed.

“Enhanced alert has been issued in border districts such as Chamba and Kangra, which share boundaries with Jammu & Kashmir. All field units have been instructed to intensify surveillance and patrolling in sensitive zones, including tourist hotspots, public transport hubs, religious sites, and locations with frequent public gatherings,” a senior police officer said.

All Superintendents of Police have been asked to review contingency plans, assess and reinforce communication systems, and maintain readiness for swift and effective response in case of emergencies, as per an official statement.

The police have been directed to strengthen security at inter-state borders, with regular vehicle checks and identity verification. Special surveillance would be maintained over the movement of migrant labourers while suspicious or undocumented individuals would be monitored, the statement said, adding quick response teams and anti-sabotage checks at vulnerable points would be ensured.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said, “Our police force is usually on alert. Following the terror attack in Jammu, I spoke to senior police officers and directed them to closely monitor movement along the border.”

In July last year, a high security alert was sounded by Himachal Pradesh Police especially in Kangra and Chamba amid repeated terrorist attacks in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. Superintendent of Police (Nurpur) Ashok Rattan in district Kangra told The Indian Express, “We are on the alert since after the terrorist attack. We received instructions from the state police headquarters in Shimla.”
