A high drama unfolded at the official residence of Harkesh Singh Sidhu, the Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner,on Wednesday when the govt official tried to bar people from lighting diyas beneath a tree on the sprawling premises. A woman Congress legislator and her supporters later scaled the gate of the DC residence, broke open the lock and let the people in. It all began when a group of people arrived to light diyas beneath Jand tree inside the DC residence boundary. They have been following the tradition for decades. However, the DC,in order to prevent the entry, locked the main entrance gate from inside.

Some locals then contacted the local leaders following which the Congress MLA from Kapurthala Rajbans Kaur Rana arrived with supporters and scaled the main gate. They broke open the lock and threw open the gate. However,a police led by DSP K S Heer and SHO city, who were on the DC residence premises, remained mute spectators.

Stating that it was an unfortunate incident, the DC later talking to the reporters said that there was no shrine under the tree. He said that he had asked SSP S S Mann to register a case of trespassing. He has also asked the SSP to take action against the SHO who did not stop the people from entering.
