New York-based designer Elise Øverland speaks of her love for leather, her popular label and on retailing from India
If you are a leather lover,New York-based Norwegian designer Elise Øverland might hardly be an unfamiliar name to you. In her three-year old career she has carved her niche as a designer of signature leather pieces, adroitly adding a feminine touch to it,to tone down its brashness. Her leather devotees include her girl friends model Heidi Klum, actor Kristen Stewart, the almost-adult singer Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian,Elvis Presleys granddaughter Riley Keough,Anne Hathaway,Britney Spears and singer Fergie; or as she puts it,her label Elise Øverland,is not just my brand its me and my friends. Its strange, because I dont even have a press agent. I handle everything by myself. I guess it is because of my big social life, that the brand has grown by itself. I have this huge social network my girlfriends like Kelly Osbourne,Gillian Jacobs,Nikki Hilton attend my quirky gender-bending shows and they also hang out at my Chelsea studio, smiles Øverland, who is in India for the preview of her collection at Kitsch in Emporio Mall,Vasant Kunj.
Though she is known for her rock n roll stage pieces (her first design gig included doing pieces for Steven Tyler of Aerosmith) the 30-something designer doesnt stick out as a willowy rocker-chic girl. Its funny how people brand you. I never perceived myself that way. I think I am quite feminine. I use leather because it has a rock power to it,almost like an animal instinct. I usually use stretched leather, which has a lycra feel and makes one look super slim, she said, kitted in a black dress from her label. Hopefully, her few scandalously short dresses will find a following amongst Indias socialites, including Mumbai where she is holding a trunk show tomorrow. I dont know much about Indian socialites, but I found actor Priyanka Chopra in one of my dresses for a magazine shoot, she smiles.
