Refusing to tolerate illegal constructions in Zirakpur, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday directed the Municipal Corporation,Zirakpur, not to sanction any further plans for construction of unauthorised colonies in the area.
A division bench on Wednesday passed the directions during the resumed hearing of a petition arising out of a suo motu notice taken by the High Court on the poor infrastructure in Zirakpur. Counsel for Zirakpur MC Wednesday submitted that the plans for unauthorised colonies were being sanctioned since the Punjab government had directed the MC to issue plans even if the draft plans and other approvals for the colonies had not been cleared.
Taking strong exception to this, the High Court put breaks on any further sanctions to unauthorised colonies in Zirakpur. Last year, the Zirakpur Municipal Corporation claimed that all possible steps have been taken to ensure that there is no more water logging in Zirakpur. The claim was made in pursuant to a petition filed by a widow whose husband had died of electrocution after water had entered her house, owing to heavy rainfall in 2009. The Zirakpur MC had also claimed, last year, that after steps taken by the MC,in 2010,no complaints of water logging have been received. Its claims were belied when on July 23 after heavy rainfall water yet again entered the houses of several residents of Vikas Nagar.
The High Court had taken suo motu notice on the basis of a news item which had highlighted that a man was electrocuted in a bid to save his inverter from rainwater entering his house due to the non-effective sewage system. The Court had observed that there appears to be a situation of chaos and danger to the health of residents of Zirakpur, which is known as the gateway to the capital of Punjab and Haryana.
