Students of NIIFT,Mohali display their skills

Displaying a unique combination of both artistic talent and scientific frame of mind, students of the Textile Design Department,NIIFT,Mohali, presented Suvayan 10,the annual textile design exhibition at Hotel Shivalikview,Sector-17,Chandigarh.

“The works displayed are the product of five months of research,” says Meeta Gawri, assistant professor at NIIFT. “This year, the focus is on saris, floral embroideries, quilting, bedding and cushions and designer wears,” she adds. For the autumn-winter season, students have worked on abstracts, doris, surface implementation, prints and embroidery.

Samrudhi Sharma,a final year student at NIIFT,Mohali, says floral patterns dominate her party wear collection. “My party wear dresses display floral paterns and pleating. The aim is to make one look glamorous and trendy while being comfortable,” she says.

Neha Singh, meanwhile, has fashioned bedding and cushions especially for children. “My designs are based on the concept of happiness and chromatic fusion elements. I have tried to include teddy bears, floral patterns, cakes and different toy-designs in my work,” she says.

Meanwhile the students of Garment Manufacturing Technology(GMT),NIIFT,Mohali, displayed their sartorial skills at a diploma project presentation at Hotel Park Grand,sector-43,Chandigarh on Wednesday. “We sport brands like Benetton,Madame,Numero Uno and Pepe but are not aware about the role played by the export houses. Our students have worked in conjunction with the skills available in export houses,” says Gawri. “Students worked on problems like cost reduction, time management, enhancing quality and productivity. They have created products like disposable perspiration absorption pads to cater to the practical needs of customers,” she sums up.
