Haryana yet to control crime against women

Even after the Haryana government’s tall claims regarding women development and empowerment in the state, the police seemed to have failed to curb crimes against women in Haryana.

Even after the Haryana government’s tall claims regarding women development and empowerment in the state, the police seemed to have failed to curb crimes against women in Haryana.

According to figures maintained by the Haryana Police, around 60 to 70 cases of rapes and molestation are seen in various districts across the state every month. While on an average 1,100 to 1,200 murders take place every year,40 per cent of the victims are women or girls. Despite these facts, the state government is yet to formulate specific mechanisms to ensure the safety and security of the women.

The last four months has only seen a triple murder case in which a woman and her daughter were slaughtered to death and bodies of two women being recovered from Panipat’s Bawail village and from the riverbank in Kharkhauda, respectively.

In another case, residents of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s native village in Rohtak had to face a lot of hardship in getting a case registered against a person for allegedly raping a minor girl.

Then there was a case where a man had strangulated his three daughters at Bahu in Jhajjar district. While one died, two had to be hospitalised.

When contacted,a senior police officer, said: “Many of these crimes are within the family. For instance,a man has strangulated his three daughters. He does not has any criminal history, but one fine morning, gets up and decides to murder his children. Incidentally, those were girls. The police could not do much in preventing such a crime but can only detect it and punish the guilty, which is our duty. We are making persistent efforts to prevent crimes against women.”

Reacting to the law and order situation in the state,Indian National Lok Dal leader Ajay Chautala said: “A jungle raj prevailing in the state. Traders are feeling helpless and insecure, people are being murdered in broad daylight, women are being raped and murdered blatantly. Officers, politicians and everybody else is involved in property dealing, rather than controlling the deteriorating law and order situation.”
